True or false: A chump at HW makes more than a champ at CW or LHW?

Michael Moorer said he made more money with ONE heavyweight fight than in his entire career as champ at Light Heavyweight...true or false? Did I get the fighter right, or was it someone else?

Look at the list of guys who moved up, no coincidence:

Minto (till he couldn't cut it)

With a few exceptions its always been true.

 

Yep CW, LHW is in no-man's land. We like middleweights and heavyweights. The divisions in between are for guys who can't make it in the middle or a holding area for the heavyweight division. Unfair, but it plays out that way.

 

Depends whom. Spinks made huge money at HW but wasn't fighting nobodies. He was fighting big names like Holmes, Cooney & Tyson.

While HWs usually make more money, a more established fighter at LHW/CW, especially with an HBO contract, will make more money than just any HW out there.

Jones & Hopkins at 175 make more than your average fringe contender at HW.

 

Used to be true, not so anymore. Roy Jones easily beat out the chumps at Heavyweight. I would reckon that somewhat extended to Antonio Tarver during his career between the Jones Win and the Hopkins Loss. I don't know about Dawson.

 

Hopkins was getting $200,000 and $300,000 paydays at middleweight until De La Hoya and Trinidad.

 

It's all down to who you fight

 

That's still better than most guys at heavyweight. Of course the Klitschkos get a lot more, Haye gets more, and also Arreola who fights on HBO.

But journeymen and fringe contender heavyweights, or guys on ESPN?

Unless they're lucky enough to get a fight with a big name like a Klitschko, I doubt they're getting six figures.

 

Spinks only averaged around $100K for his undisputed LHW title defenses, then he moves up to fight Holmes then you can add $1 million to that number

 

My trainer broke the top 10 at cruiserweight, lost a close fight, was out of shape and started taking fights on short notice against heavyweight prospects b/c of his glossy record. Anyway, he said those were his biggest payday years and said he made almost $300k one year. He fought Purlette, Solis, and Dimetrenko.

 

i think haye is a prime example he was undisputed cruiserweight champion and he wasnt even fighting on ppv events, although America is unimpressed with him atleast they know about him now and he will most likely get picked up by an american network as he is the most exciting HW out there.

This always confuses me the fans want heavyweights to be quick, in shape and have good boxing skills yet refuse too watch the lighter weights who still show power and they are more likely too show off these attributes

It is not quite as bad as the title of your thread. HW chumps don't make close to what LHW or CW Champions do. Your list of guys who made the jump and your example of Moorer are elite fighters not chumps.

I'll tell you right now, Chad Dawson and Steve Cunningham are not going to be outearned in their next fight by frigging Demetrice King or Louis Monaco.

One example of a fighter who fought HW for the better money to develop his career before going down to try for a title is BJ Flores. They always limited him to small HW's though.

One real good example is Roy Jones Jr. who has purses at LHW to compare to his purse at HW against Ruiz. If it were so frigging incredibly different for a top tier champion, RJJ as undefeated HW champion would have defended the title. He made every bit as much money as a star fighter at LHW.

Chad packed his bags and survived a bunch of ass kickings. He managed a draw with current WBO top 15 Chauncy Welliver. Lost a rematch though. 300K a year won't last long though like that. Good for him if he made that much. Welliver is top 15 and I am almost positive he has never cleared that much in a year. Chad is fibbing to you on his purses IMO.

You also have to consider that the ranks of HW fighters vastly outnumber the amount of CW's out there. It is easier to get fights at HW based on the sheer volume of activity in the division.
