Montiel was only relying on his puncher's chance and got it.

man that japanese kid took some bombs

  9. Zumi was winning easily, too. Montiel landed four or five really good left hands in that KO sequence. Wonder what the odds were for this fight

Fernando Montiel stops Hozumi Hasegawa in 4, new WBC/WBO Champ!

After winning most of the first 3,5 rounds, Hasegawa got caught by a huge counter left hook, fell back to the ropes where Montiel quickly finished him off via a rock solid 4-5 punch combo. The stoppage came at the very moment the bell rang. Hasegawa's eyes looked clear seconds later but was defenseless and Lawrence Cole had to stop it.

Fernando Montiel is the BW World Champion!

I thought so, Hasegawa past opponents are nowhere as dangerous a puncher as Montiel.

Good fight while it lasted. I think Montiel had to get the stoppage as he had little to no chance of getting a decision.

The first 3 rounds his timing was off and as soon as he got his left hand sorted out (left hooks were a tad wild) he put Hozumi on ***** street.

Referee was awful again. Fight should have been over as soon as he took the big left hand when he was on the ropes.

If Hasegawa had taken a knee he could have stayed in the fight. He was winning the rounds (1 and 3 clearly with round 2 going either way). But Hasegawa held himself up using the rope, allowing Montiel to tee off on him. Honestly, it was a pretty dumb move for a world champion boxer. But it appears that Montiel had the power to get to Hasegawa sooner or later.
