Sailor got KO'd by Willie Feldman in one round so I wouldn't call it a stretch to say Jones TKO's him. People using "statistics" to decide who wins a fight always amuses me, especially when they are clearly manipulated in favour of the boxer that the person is picking. For example Roy Jones vs Carlos Monzon: Handspeed: Jones Footspeed: Jones Athleticism: Jones Combinations: Jones Reaction speed: Jones Chin: maybe Monzon (but Jones was only hit while past prime, weight-drained so it doesn't matter) Far from objective.
Or... Liston vs. Floyd Patterson Handspeed: Patterson Skill: Patterson Footspeed: Patterson Athleticism: Patterson Combinations: Patterson Chin: Well, obviously Liston's never going to land a clean shot on him, so what's the difference? :conf
Liston was a VERY dangerous man. There is some great youtube footage of Liston's fights and a great documentary on this enigma of a man who no one really knew. Sure, Ali beat Liston twice and Eddie Machen gave him a difficult fight. But RJJ is really an unproven commodity at heavyweight except for that one brilliant performance against a mediocre John Ruiz. Ruiz, who was a very tough and resilent fighter, would have been quickly dispatched by Liston despite his herky jerky movement and having a hard style to figure out. Liston's jab alone could knock fighters out. Bottom line - Jones could have some early success and outbox Liston for awhile. But once Sonny connects it would be quickly over. Unless the fix is in Liston wins this fighter by kayo.
An absolutely prime Jones defeats Liston but this is a prime Jones not the recent Jones who wouldn't last one round.
Jones would school Monzon though and its because of these reasons and the fact he doesnt have much in the way of an equaliser. Liston is a different kettle of fish as hes far bigger, stronger, 1 punch KO power with excellent skill and timing. If Liston was a 168lber would he stand a chance against Jones? Probably not but size counts in fights However for the purposes of this thread, Jones may outbox Liston for as long as he can stay away from Listons power. Liston was supposedly not too convincing against Machen who boxed and moved and Alis speed and movement gave him nightmares
I read this thread and thought how ridiculous... But then i thought about it and realsied we're talking about prime Roy here. I'd just want to see the fight between Roy and the guys who have to carry him into the ring for this match up.
I'm not making a pick but don't you think Monzon in a 15 round bout would have the advantages in stamina, ring generalship and experience (against 160 lb Roy)? Provided that Monzon lasts that far, and from what I've seen the chances are that he would, Jones would have a big struggle in the last 5 rounds even if Monzon had given up the majority of the first 10.
I'm not sure Monzon does have advantages in stamina, he was a smoker after all and his pace was hardly red hot that it'd drown Jones. Not all 12round fighters would have trouble in 15round fights, for instance Calzaghe. Jones is incredibly physically fit himself and never had any problems with the distance. 15rounds is harder, but its harder for both men, including the man used to fighting the distance and its always harder on the fighter whos taken more punnishment
I imagine Jones would probably do better than Monzon in a long distance run, but in the ring it's different. Monzon was great at pacing himself and stayed relaxed in the ring, as a result he never ran out of stamina in 15 round fights. In boxing, fighters like James Toney can go as many rounds as they wish yet in-shape, athletic looking fighters sometimes gas out after 4 rounds. Jones never had any stamina problems except late in his career but at 160 he was quite inexperienced even in 12 round fights. The fight with Hopkins was his first that went the distance, and he had some rough moments during it. Jones's idea of pacing himself was usually to go to the ropes and sometimes to give up rounds, Monzon did it simply by controlling his opponent.
Sheer insanity to pick Jones...it would be like a man plagued for a very short while by a buzzing mosquito before killing it with a swat..Liston's sheer mass and power would prevail before a serious blow was landed by him..the awful, wordless grace of the setup blow, wherever it happened to land, ala Floyd Patterson I, with Jones stunned into immobility, and then being on the receiving end of a few clubbing, imprecise but debilitating lefts and rights, culminating with a coup de grace left to the side of the head...a cold, impersonal execution before the second round meets it's halfway point...a formality to count to 10 by the referee. It would end any other way only in science fiction concocted by the most imaginative writer of the Roy Jones Fan Club. You think Tarver, Jones or Green hurt him with their relatively puny blows?
Roy Jones would be competitive With Liston for three, four rounds, tops ! After that,it would be goodnight Roy !
Roy would run but eventually get caught.. I don't know a guy who got knocked out by one punch. plus the guy that threw that one punch is not as hard of s puncher as Liston is. If he takes one flush shot I think it would be over shortly after that. jones is just too small. this might be familiar to his match with Patterson.
