If only he had taken a knee...

Fair play to Montiel though, waited for his chance and certainly took it.

Just caught the fight in lovely quality thanks to TC :yep

First off it was shaping up to be a terrific fight, thats pretty clear :good
I thought Montiel looked really strong at the weight, much stronger than I thought he would, I dont remember him looking like a world beater in any of his recent fights (against Castillo he looked like a monster)....he seemed incredibly comfortable on the back foot against Hasegawa and I thought Hasegawa should have pressed the action more and forced Montiel into a higher pace.

Hasegawa has a great third round I thought landing a sublime counter right, seemed as he was getting right into the fight at this stage. But what a stoppage that was, Montiel has always been a good finisher but when he had him stunned he instantly jumped right on top landing another right and it was all over from there.

Alot of things to consider in the aftermath about whether Hosegawa was struggling with weight or just got caught and maybe he just isn't in the top class of fighters...It was very easy to get caught up in the hype as I did because he looked so sensational recently.

I still look forward to see where he goes from here...he still has a bright future :good

    maybe Cermano?

It does when you box 2/3 times a year and fighting in the most important fight of your life.

    Good points.

Mijares is a perfect comeback opponent for Hasegawa.

Bah. The stoppage was just right.

It was a world title fight, and the round was just about up. The ref allowed Hozumi a moment after the double hook to see if he could defend himself while backed to the ropes. Montiel flurried like crazy, and Hozumi took shots, but Cole isn't psychic (and probably didn't see Hozumi's hand tied up in the ropes and holding him up, from his vantage). You have to take human reaction speed into account and give these refs a break once in a while. He ultimately did the right thing and jumped in and stopped it when he saw Hozumi's head bouncing around. Could he have reacted 4-5 seconds faster? Yes, but again this was a world champion with his back to the ropes at the very end of a round. It'd be disrespectful of any official not to wait until the last possible second (even if it means risking a couple of unnecessary shots) to give the champ every opportunity to come through it.

Well he just never protected himself. One arm over the rope quite casual, like he was judging Miss Japan, whilst Montiel cheerfully teed off on him. Odd.

The thing is - is he going to freeze up like that next time he gets clipped? Like a tiny Japaneese Frank Bruno?

    Hehe.

Just watched it a quality fight. I loved Montiel's feints that made Hozumi cautious in the 4th then he takes advanatage of it with that left. He did good with them feints once he realised he couldnt 'box' with this guy. I thought hasegawa did amazing to stay up but he was out of it and Montiels combo was sickening.

I'll tell you what thought, Hasegawa was boxing awesomly - what Bantam around could box with him?

Wrapped, McG. Wrapped around the rope like the stripe on a barber pole.

He was not "with it" while Montiel teed off. He should have been on the floor. Judging by how quickly he recovered and how bright-eyed he was just a moment after the stoppage with Cole still waving his hands, he would likely have scraped himself off the floor just in time to be saved by the bell.

No discredit whatsoever to Montiel, he scored a fabulous knockout. That rope deserves an assist credit, however.

The thing is, you get guys with physical memory good enough that they can protect themselves in that state. Then you get guys so good that they can actually continue to fight in that state. Second to last, you get guys who are able to take a knee in that state. Lastly, you get guys that, yeah, like you say, get an assist handed out by a rope. But maybe, like you say, he was basically KO'd whilst standing, although if you look at the most famouse such case, you can clearly see Beau Jack lifting his arms to protect himself whilst basically unconcsious against Ike Williams.

Yep, he definitely should've went down.

Good chin and powers of recovery it seems (was fine soon after, didn't seem badly hurt) but, as McGrain said, like Bruno he needs to figure out what he can do when buzzed, because with his somewise ultra-aggressive style (which does compliment his fleet-footed boxing, the transition between both styles has often been breathtaking) he is gonna' get clipped and buzzed.

Let's hope he bounces back well. He IS a quality fighter, despite the fight ending so early today and Montiel's apparent slipping over the past few fights, he was obviously right up for this one, and has carrried his power up.

Hasegawa was looking brilliant till the KO. And that punch would have KO'd any Bantamweight.
