BOXING: Ulster is buzzing - McGuigan

    Published Date: 30 April 2010
BARRY McGuigan believes big time boxing is returning to Belfast.
The former WBA featherweight world champion is convinced the current crop of talent, along with his rising star Carl Frampton, have all the tools to make it a big year for boxing in the province.

European champions Brian Magee and Paul McCloskey, plus British champion Martin Lindsay will all defend their titles in the coming months and it is hoped that the fights will happen at Belfast venues.

And McGuigan believes the future of boxing in Ireland is looking good.
"It is great for boxing here that Magee, McCloskey and Lindsay are doing very well.

"Boxing in Belfast, Northern Ireland and on the island of Ireland is booming and I believe it will get better and better.

"Magee, McCloskey and Lindsay are very good fighters, but I rate my fighter Carl Frampton above them all.

"No disrespect to anyone but I believe Frampton has the ability to go places and win the big titles.

"I know that is a bold prediction, but I really believe this kid is something special.

"He has tremendous power, he is very heavy handed. I have held the pads over the years for some big punchers and he hits the pads harder than any of them. He can switch styles and he is clever in the ring.

"He also a great attitude. He does not drink or smoke and he lives for the sport.

"He is also a great listener and takes everything that is said to him on board. This kid has everything and everyone he has sparred with have been very impressed with the quality he has," added McGuigan.

McGuigan is also ready to fast track his fighter to a title fight.

"We want to start moving him up the rankings. He will fight in May, then hopefully in June on the McCloskey bill in Belfast and then again after that.

"We want him to be fighting at home on a regular basis.

"We want to have him fighting for ten rounds before the end of the year and we hope to have him fighting for some kind of title.

"I have great belief and faith in the kid and I believe I have sound judgement when it comes to boxers," he added.

The Clones Cyclone has also been impressed with the resurgence of boxing in Belfast.

"Northern Ireland has always had a number of great fighters over the years and it is great for the sport that Magee, McCloskey and Lindsay all hold titles. And Kevin O'Hara is also fighting for the British title soon.

"I watched Lindsay defending his British featherweight title against Jamie Arthur and I was impressed.

"He was very patient and clever. I thought he could have taken Arthur out earlier, but he was patient and got the job done.

"The team behind him are doing a great job and he could go on to bigger and better things.

"Magee is maybe nearing the end of his career, but he was fantastic in his last fight against Mads Larsen to lift the European super middleweight title. I thought that was his best performance to date.

"I also think Brian is in a position to make some money. If he fights Paul Smith for the British and European title I believe he will win that fight.

"He will be too clever for Smith. The world scene at this level is buzzing at the minute with the Super Six competition going on.
"There a number of good fighters in that, but I believe Brian would give any of them a fight," he added.

McGuigan also believes McCloskey will prove difficult to beat on home soil.

"He is an ackward southpaw and he has done really well so far in the fights he has had. It will be a big year for him and hopefully he will do well.

"He is an awkward customer and one of those guys you hate to fight.

"And O'Hara takes on Gary Sykes for the British super featherweight title next month and it will be a tough fight.

"But if Kevin performs on the night, he could get the job done. It would be great to have another British champion from here.

"Martin Rogan, it seems, is also on the road back to full fitness.

"He is in the twilight of his career, but he has a puncher's chance and you cannot discount him to cause a few upsets, as he has done in the past.

"It is a great time for boxing here and hopefully that will continue, but remember the name Carl Frampton," added McGuigan.

    Thats better slappy

Lads who have you picked out for your semi-finalist, finalists and winner in today's Prizefighter?

And who is your outside bet to win it?

I hope one of them chins Hide - it would make my night. Can you imagine the ring celebration if Corbett connected on Hide's chin - here's to hoping. But, in all reality, on paper - Hide is head and shoulders above the whole field, more so, than any prizefighter to date.

actually its not mate. I have noticed that you dont put links with the articles you post - the thing is that the people that make this news do monitor the amount of clicks that each story gets on their website and if we have the whole story here then they get no additional clicks on their website - then they dont know that we have enjoyed the story and will be less inclined to add more boxing coverage.

I would say that at most you should have half the story and a link - that way if someone is interested in the story they can read more on the news outlet that issued it and enjoy the story and the webmaster sees the traffic for the story. everyones happy.

Not having a pop mate just lettin ya know the score. :good

I wasn't out to criticise you Jonny, but of course the fighters you named get more coverage. The standard is vastly superior of the Northern fighters you mentioned to the ones from the Republic, there's such a difference in quality(or at least proven quality) that there would be no way the other fighters would get no coverage.

My comment was more on how RTÉ fighters get more coverage in this country than Sky fighters. Now I'm aware Murray firmly falls into the RTÉ category but he's the least known out of all the fighters that have headlined on the channel. Duddy(who hasn't fought in Ireland in ages) is no greater quality than Lyndsay or Magee and yet he gets far more coverage overall. Maybe it's because he's with a big American promoter but I feel a lot of it has to do with him being more established as a name in the 26 counties due to RTÉ.

To say they are sure of tv all over Ireland when they fight is true, to say they're actually drawing any attention all over Ireland is another matter.
RTÉ audiences for Pro Box Live are greater than Friday Fight Night as far as I'm aware, and that's including all of the UK viewers who can watch FFN.
Prizefighters may draw similar numbers to Pro Box Live as they're advertised well, but the rest don't get a great draw in the majority.

*it should be noted that cards shown on Saturdays(Warren cards) do get equally as good numbers as Pro-Box Live, sometimes surpassing it.

Why's your mother so popular ?..........easily accessible and very entertaining.

-I apologise that's a bit crude for me, but sometimes it's required.

I'm looking forward to tonight's Prizefighter but would air on the side of caution regarding Darren Corbett. We are all taking it for granted he will smash John Anthony and end up fighting Hide which in a tournament like this is a dangerous assumption. Ovill Mckenzie was fancied by nobody in the last one at this weight.

Anthony is a bit fresher and can punch too so I would like to see Corbett take it one step at a time and professionally remove him then worry about Herbie. I want Darren to do the business but I think it will take a brave man to bet against Hide, unless of course someone lands flush because Herbie's chin is pretty poor remember.

Anyway, considering Darren was telling us he could make light-heavyweight again, coming in over the cruiserweight limit for this is pretty strange and quite worrying. Let's hope his stamina doesn't fail and we are left with another "what might have been" story.

It was just a joke. Having seen Patrick Kielty in full flow i swore the Northern Irish had a sense of humour.

The reason I didnt do Corbett for an outside bet was related to your point on stamina. Darren has only got a few weeks notice to train properly for this as he has had such a long lay off. The other factor here is that his fight is the third one - so if he is successful he will have the least rest.

I remember sitting at ringside for the last prizefighter tourney and Prince Arron was the first fight, it really benefitted him throughout the whole tournament. Take the semi-final, Brett Flournoy had a great fight with O'Meara but he was in the ring again within minutes to face well-rested Arron.
