Wasn't Alvarez v Cotto supposed to be a welterweight fight?

I was suprised when buffer said junior middleweights... Cotto is too small for welter let alone above. Did Alvarez just not want to make weight?

It's not a title fight, why would he bother making 147?

Its not a title fight but they were suppose to fight at WW. Please don't let this be an advantange that his promoters got for Canelo in order for him to have an edge over Cotto :fire

What is it then when Cotto is a lightweight coming up 3 division and Canelo a welter coming up 1?

    What are you talking about?

Did the contract specify both fighters must weigh in at 147?

    Otherwise this is spectacularly normal...

If you want to be a WW you should make the WW limit. I'm disappointed with Alvarez maybe he is just another hype job

Lame! Altough Cotto has been fighting above 140 for a while he doesnt belong anywhere near 154Lbs. 147 would have been a more competitive match, I just dont agree with this anymore than JMM vs Floyd. Ive been a Canelo follower I hope he doesnt take the Chavez dud JR route.

Most fighters weigh a few pounds more for non title fights as there's no point draining themselves without reason. As stated above it's common practice in boxing and you should know that.

Now it just so happens that in this fight, one of the men in it would have already been undersized if they had weighed in at title weight. But that's no reflection on Alvarez, he didn't pick the opponent so it doesn't make him a hype job by any means.

I hope that you are right because I will be happy if there is a new exiting fighter from Mexico to feel the void. Still I think that if a fight is scheduled to take part at WW the fighters should come under the limit. If not they just can make it a JMW fight

It's a shame, that's all I have to say. I see though why Jose Cotto took this opportunity. If victorious esp. with over a millions people watching this could open other doors for him. I could also see why they want to make Alvarez look good and perhaps be a new face for boxing.

It's a non-title fight so it makes absolutely no difference what you want to call it. That's the point.
