How does Floyd's career stack up against SRL's?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by LordSharpshire, May 2, 2010.

  1. Ray Leonard and Floyd had a similar amount of fights, but no question Leonard had tougher opposition. But, Leonard DID have a loss in his prime to Duran, and some feel that Ray also lost to Hagler and the 2nd fight to Tommy Hearns.

So, is Floyd's career at least on par with what Ray did?

Nowhere near it. It's almost like we're talking about two different sports. SRL is top 5 ATG on anyone's list.

Ray Leonard's best wins are over Wilfred Benitez, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran.

Floyd Mayweather's best wins are over Oscar de la Hoya, Shane Mosley, Jose Luis Castillo and Ricky Hatton.

You say Ray Leonard struggled with Hearns and Hagler.

I say Mayweather struggled with Castillo and Judah.

.... you see where this is going.

  5. Top 5 Welter? Or all-time regardless of weight?

    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Sam Langford
    Ezzard Charles
    Henry Armstrong
    Harry Greb

Is SRL a lock for better than those guys?

  7. Pretty obvious that Ray struggled with Tommy quite a bit in their 2nd fight. I don't recall Floyd ever coming close to struggling that much. And, it's not Floyd's fault that there has been no Hearns, Hagler's, Benitez' to fight in his career. Sure, there have been some really good fighters, but certainly not ATG like what was available for Ray to fight.

Basically, Floyd has looked more impressive and dominant in the opponents that he faced compared to the ones that Ray faced; competition notwithstanding.

Leonard is not a top 5 great. He probably could have been but his inactivity for several years due to a detached retina kept him idle for too long to have him being bumped over some of those great P4P Stalwarts mentioned. I place him comfortably in the 9-11 range....Unlike Pacman (who i have great respect for) PBF made sure to fight the best fighter in each division he's conquered. If he beats Pacman convincingly and goes up to snatch the MW title against the lineal champ (Sergio), Floyd will easily be hovering in the 15- 20 rage at least....

Leonard's resume is far more impressive in my opinion.

    He lost to Castillo.

If Mayweather had greats of that calibre to fight in ANY division, he would have been soundly beaten.

Competition notwithstanding? Because the level of competition is irrelevant to how dominant a fighter looks? Were you expecting Leonard to look as dominant beating Hagler, Duran, Hearns and Benitez as Mayweather did in beating Carlos Baldomir and Philip N'Dou?

  14. I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you referring to the Hagler-Leonard fight?

I'm sorry but retiring so he didn't have to fight Margarito, Cotto, Clottey, Shane, PW does not constitute a list of unavailable welterweight fighters. They were very available to Mayweather yet he opted to not take those fights.

SRL is a beast in his own right, don't compare Mayweather Jr, or any of the Mayweathers to Sugar Ray or Roberto Duran or Tommy Hearns.
