He fought Williams at 160. He does have the WBC title at 154, but he did not win it in the ring. He won the vacant "interim" title when he fought Bunema, and then the WBC gave him the real title after Forrest was killed.
Martinez isn't really a big middleweight ... he's really a natural 154 lb fighter ... he and Floyd can meet at a catchweight of 156 and get it on.
Thanks mate, for some reason I thought that fight was at 154. Interesting to see what he does with the belts, a potential fight with Floyd must have just become a major factor in that decision!
A catch weight is pointless in my opinion. There is only one big fight for Martinez at 160, and that is a rematch with Pavlik. However, based on the fact that Pavlik's weight hit 190 just a few weeks after the Espino fight, and then hit 192 less than two weeks after the Martinez fight, I'm guessing KP never sees 160 again. A Martinez/Mayweather fight would be best at 154.
If Pavlik would have beaten Martinez than I would have loved to see Mayweather try to make that fight. Sure 160 is way above Mayweather's best weight but it would have been a huge challenge and thats what I want to see Mayweather do with the rest of his career, huge challenges. But now Pavlik got beaten that fight doesn't carry the same weight. A Martinez or Williams fight at 160 would be good but those are better suited for 154.
