He was hurt, but not going down from that one. He held Mosley's arm to prevent him from throwing again. The second shot Mosley landed was closer to knocking him down, as you can actually see his knees buckle severly. Certainly the closest I've ever seen Mayweather to being dropped from a damaging punch (the Judah KD was all balance). That said, those were murderous shots thrown by a hard puncher, with the first landing right on the chin and the second on the temple. Floyd's no Margarito, but his chin is good enough to keep him out of trouble in those rare instances when his defense fails him or he gets sloppy.
Mosley hit Margo with over 100 shots just like that before Margo went down or even looked loopy. Cotto took far more shots from Mosely than Mayweather did and never looked loopy. ONE SHOT had Mayweather loopy = weak chin. I think you Floyd fans must not watch ANY other boxers if you think it is normal to get all loopy every time you get hit clean. Boxers take shots like that all the time. Just look at all the punishment Floyd dealt to Mosley. Mosley never did a chicken dance and Floyd was pummelling him and at least a FEW were even more powerful/cleaner than the one Floyd was hit with. Floyd's weak chin probably will never matter because no one will be able to find it. However, it also means that he CAN be beaten. If not for the chin, Mayweather would be totally unstoppable even theoretically. With the weak chin, he is only unstoppable in practice.
Exactly. Mayweather's genius is in his defense. However, unless you're going to argue that Miguel Cotto, Mayorga & Vargas have rock-solid chins, Mayweather's is average at best. Mosley's top wins are either decisions or late stoppages. He's a big puncher, but he doesn't really blow top guys out of there, despite landing solid blows. He can stop top guys, but not by blowing them out early. Mayweather was scrambled enough to assume that one or two more heavy punches would have been enough to leave the fight close to its conclusion. Mayweather showed great smarts to hold on and survive as he did. However, the way he reacts when hit by solid shots isn't that of a fighter with a top level chin. He's amazingly talented, but if he's still fighting when his reflexes start to slide, most fights he loses will be by stoppage, not decision. That's not taking anything away from a great champion, that's just nature.
Money Mayweather has a great chin, he's never been down from a punch or seriously hurt. Mosley is P4P one of the hardest punchers in boxing if not boxing history ( definatley WW in this era). Money May took 3 great shots from Mosley and keep coming forward.
Mosley is an accumulative puncher. Like Vitali Klitschko, for instance. He doesn't stop top guys with single shots, most of his notable KO/TKO wins have come late in the day.
For whatever reason, perhaps because it's so infrequent, people tend to forget the times Mayweather gets hit clean and it doesn't bother him in the least, and remember only the few times he looks genuinely hurt. Mosley landed other right hands in that fight. DLH caught him with a couple of very good left hooks, including one at the very end of their fight. Hatton caught him, Judah caught him...he's been hit clean before and shown no effects. But for some reason when he does look wobbled everyone acts like it's the first clean punch he's ever taken. He's a great defensive fighter, but he hasn't gone through 41 professional fights, including 4 moves up in weight, without being chin checked a pretty good number of times.
I'm not saying it's glass, but he still gets hit far, far less than almost any other active fighter. However, he has been wobbled a few times now despite not taking much punishment. I just think that the evidence is that he's not the sort of guy who could take the punishment that someone like Miguel Cotto - considered by many to have a less than stellar chin - could take before dropping. I think that if he fights on past his body's prime that we could see a Roy Jones-esque scenario on more than one occasion. If he's clever, of course, we won't see that.
The punches hurt Floyd because he did not see them coming. Fast speed and timing is the key to beating Floyd.
When the **** did Hatton ever hurt him?! And I'm guessing you're another noob, **** fan because you didn't mention the fight where Mayweather was most obviously hurt, against DeMarcus Corley.
Mayweather's chin is weak enough that he is beatable, even with his incredible defensive skills. It's impossible to give him an exact ranking in chin strength because he rarely gets hit. All we have to go on are the few times he has been hit hard. Floyd fans can always say he has never been knocked down. Fine. There are still reasons to believe he COULD be knocked down, relatively easily compared to what you might expect looking solely at his stats. It may not even be true. Floyd may get dropped someday, pop right back up with a whole new mindset on how to take a punch and exhibit an iron chin from that day forward. No one knows. Right now though, the evidence suggests that IF someone ever gets through that defense, Floyd will not have the chin to stand up to that. That's a big IF.
Sometimes you just get hit right on the button. Cotto has taken harder punches than the ones Pac hit him with that dropped him, but Pac's timing and placement were so exemplary that they dropped him. A lot of having a good "Chin" is seeing the punch coming and reacting, either consciously or subconsciously, to brace for the blow. Against someone like Margarito, Cotto could see the punches coming, even if he couldn't necessarily avoid them, so he took a horrific beating but was not dropped the way he was against Pacquiao. The difference is that Floyd's defense is so impeccable that if he sees or knows a punch is coming he will deflect it so he doesn't really get hit with anything that he sees coming. Whenever you see him get wobbled it's from a punch he didn't see and wasn't expecting. It just happens very rarely because he reflexes and ring smarts are so stellar.
But people have gotten through, and he did stand up to it. Judah did, to an extent, Corley did, Mosley did, even DLH hit him with some clean left hooks. You'd have to have a fighter who could get through consistently, round after round, with hard punches. And it's true of pretty much any fighter that getting hit with a bunch of hard punches will eventually break them. Floyd's no exception.
He took the first overhand right pretty well. The second did buckle his knees spaghetti style but he recovered quickly and dominated mosley for it. He passed the chin test very well.
