Having rewatched the fight with HBO commentary... WOW! Martinez opened with 4-0 on the Lederman card, in the next 4 he lost maybe 2 or 3 (one with 10-8 ), and after a dominating 9th, Maravilla suddenly needed a KO to win according to Lampley. Merchant called Martinez a runner in the first rounds he totally outslicked and outlanded Pavlik and Steward couldn't stop talking about the pressure that will break Maravilla down. In reality, Sergio easily won the first and last four, and you could make an argument he still got 1-2 in that tough middle part, but it surely looked like HBO was sitting at the judges table. What a shame they made a boxing masterclass look like some close ass fight turned by a cut. :-(

New to the thread but an old-school Martinez proponent (well...at least as far back as Bunema :yep).

Terrific fighter, an ironhorse having his best moments in his thirties. An inspiration.

A classy and likable guy, too. Some may not like the showboating, but it's mostly just having fun...all tasteful stuff for the most part. Also, in clinches he always clearly - almost exaggeratedly - moves his head down and away from the opponent (this can be interpreted as self-preservation and not wanting to get butted himself, but so often you see guys billygoat and push their skulls toward the other man's face). When he encounters rough tactics bordering on uncalled fouls (like Pavlik's elbows and shoulders) he grimaces but doesn't pause the action to *****. He's a trooper, and always humble and complimentary of his opponents.

His speed, reflexes and conditioning for a man his age are just damn silly.

The hands-low thing is actually brilliant in his case, with his style. It helps him conserve his energy (if you've ever been through boxing drills, you know that just holding your arms up for 12 rounds can be exhausting) and he trusts in his compensating traits (the loose shoulders, quick feet, tucked chin, and excellent awareness) to keep him from paying for it...usually. And opponents don't know what angle his punches are going to come from. Those lead lefts seem to teleport from his hip to just in front of the enemy's chin. His hooks are nasty business too, the way he turns them over while moving laterally...it's just god damn silly.
