    :good

Pacquiao currently as well (if we're not just going on ability).

    Edit: And Duran of course!

You should get yourself a Roy Jones career set then, see if that changes your perceptions. Floyd is a great fighter, but Roy Jones' ability was stratospheric.

I could have mentioned fighters like Armstrong, Dempsey, La Motta, Frazier, Louis, Sanchez, Liston, Conn, Foster but those I mentioned earlier were some of the fighters that I personally feel deserve to be mentioned alongside mayweather.

That's my personal opinion. Got it into your thick skull yet. If you don't understand what these forums are for then i suggest you don't bother.

If you want to get into a pissing contest that's fine by me.

I have watched a hell of a lot of Roy Jones fights. You are correct, in the early days especially, he was a phenomenon. Extremely gifted and a showman to boot but there is just something about Mayweather that I really admire. We all know the ins and outs of what makes a good fighter offensively and defensivel but to me he just stands out and it's extremely difficult to explain why. He isn't the most exciting fighter I have seen but skill wise, I personally believe he is unmatched.

Napoles vs Cokes 1: Watch it:good

Kid Gavilan vs anyone: Watch it :good

Don't get antsy pal, just trying to lend a helping hand.

Interesting opinion. I'm sure how you can say that Floyd is the best compared to an all-rounder like Leonard. Floyd's never shown the versatility that Ray did.

Fair enough, I suppose I shouldn't let it get to me.

I will go as far as to say this though... Most sports fans refer to golden eras in there sport. Whether it be motor sport, football, rugby etc But we as boxing fans are the worst for it. What I mean is, a lot of fans refuse to admit that Sportsmen and women from current times could lace the boots of their piers from the 40's, 50's, 60's 70's etc. I don't know if it is out of respect for sportspersons in the years gone by or an attempt to prove on'e knowledge of a particular sport. In my opinion, i think that should Mayweather beat Pacquiao and retire, that in 20 years time people will look back on him more favourably.
Although i think he's a bit of a toss pot, what i do admire is how he makes it look so bloody easy

True but as i said earlier, he makes it look so easy. I'm sure if there ever came a time that he was forced to adapt and be versatile, that he would come up with the goods. Although, until that day it is purely speculation.

When you say all rounder. what is it that you see abiliy wise that separates Leonard from Mayweather? versatility is a very expansive word. Leonard was outstanding as i say on my profile, so please dont confuse this as me undermining him as a fighter.

These GOAT arguements are so subjective though. Certain styles catch the eye of certain fans. I appreciate quite a variety of styles so it is quite difficult for me to separate fighters from each other at the top of the tree. Each have their own merits. i think at the moment when it comes to Roy Jones, I can't see past the damage he has been doing to his legacy in recent years. i personally think that if he had retired after the 1st tarver fight, people would have no question about who the very best is.

I think boxing skills peaked in the late 70's/early 80's, with the likes of Hagler, Leonard, Hearns, Duran etc at the top of the sport and stacks of top quality lads coming out of the Olympics.

These days, the amateur game doesn't produce elite pro boxers, it produces potentially elite ones, subject to dozens of criteria - many of them need ten fights to even resemble a half decent pro.

In my opinion this is a direct result of the scandalous robbery (to say the least) of Jones in the 88 games. It led to the introduction of a points for punches scoring system - whereby jabs don't count, body shots don't count (even when the opponent is Castillo'd on the floor needing medical attention) and making your opponent miss and use of clever counters gets you nowhere. Plus all the holding and running etc, :zzz

Plus, there is the obsession amongst promoters of keeping their men undefeated. Not everyone is going to remain unbeaten, you can't build every fight like you could Leonard vs Hearns I.

There will always be the phenomenal fighters like Mayweather and Pacquiao, and the likes of DLH, Mosley, Hopkins, Holyfield etc right behind them, but the days where genuine world class fighters were struggling to get title shots are gone, maybe for good - which is a shame.
