He's not bad at all. People like to joke about how he's analogous to Matthew Hatton (in relation to Ricky) or even Bobby Pacquiao, as the vastly inferior brother to Miguel Angel Cotto. OK, he's not as good. That doesn't mean he isn't capable. A lot of revisionists on here seem to have him getting completely outclassed for an entire fight by Juan Diaz. That simply isn't what happened in a game and competitive but clear loss. Those people (and anybody else interested) should actually give it a fresh watch. Given how flabby he looked, it was begin to appear frightfully clear that my sentimental pick was going to get demolished in a hurry. Instead he took the fight to a widely regarded prospect and hurt him badly. That he lost to a promising Alvarez is no blemish (no moreso than losing to an up-and-coming Diaz was at lightweight). His body-punching is cut from the same cloth as his brother's. His defense is fair at least. His chin is something else, and he's as brave as they come. I'd like to see him in with the Marquez-Diaz II winner. Seriously. It would be another big payday for the hardworking veteran, and so he'd be up for it (if his performance in this career-high payday was any indication). He'll be in better shape making light welterweight, and working himself over to make 135 is probably no longer safe. If it's Diaz he'll have a chip on his shoulder and want some revenge. If it's Marquez he'll have an opportunity to claim the scalp of a legend (yes, I think Marquez is that far gone that Jose Cotto would have a chance...I'm not even sure JMM can get by Diaz in the rematch).
He had Alvarez on ***** street big time but just couldn't finish him off. He looked flabby at welter. JWW is red hot right now. He should trim 10 lbs and jump into the fray there. Btw I find his boxing style is almost identical to lil brother's. Granted, I said style not ability.
Yeah, I like the guy. He looked flabby but still gave Alvarez a tesst and did manage to badly hurt him. He should definitely drop to 140 though.
he was a good prospect in the amateurs he fought at 126 and had a great career.. he should be fighting at 135 and he can make that weight easily with good training and a nutritionist.. but i think he's a little late and lost all confidence and any chance of making it :hat
I don't know what happened to him after that epic, brutal, Diaz fight. I thought he was going to be one of those contenders in that division.
He took some bombs to the face from alvarez and hardly flinched gotta admire that. he should go down to 140.
He was obviously fighting beyond his weight class, Dude showed balls of steel. I got respect for JM Cotto for taking the fight on SAT. That was stacked against him in every way. In return for the favor he did , he should be allowed to get into proper shape & fight in his weight class against a top dog @ 140lbs.
that's funny. The guy is a natural lighweight or perhaps now a jr.ww He came in at 160 because he was fighting a young prospect in his best weight, so what if he wanted to diminish the size advantage.
