Jeff v Big George

I really don't see Jeffries lasting long enough for Foreman's stamina issues to become a factor. Facing a puncher of George's size and fire power would be venturing into uncharted waters for Jeffries, and with his tendency to hold his guard low and get his nose broken, he'd likely be a sitting duck for Foreman, who had a very underrated two - fisted attack..

 

I would give Jeffries better odds against Foreman than Liston for stylistic reasons.

 

Another interesting fight! As with the Liston match-up, I see Jim playing defense early on. I see George going for the early kill, with Jim teeing off enough to get George's attention, and handling himself well in the clinches. In my opinion, George would find Jim hard to push back into George's power range. In the middle rounds Jim would tee off more and more, probably even on the cards by the 10th round. As the fight wore on into the later rounds, stamina would become the key issue. Prime against prime, this favors Jim. I envision a stoppage win by Jim late in the fight...or a decision win for Jim if George finishes the fight.

Did George ever go 15 rounds? I can't remember him doing that.

 

Foreman TKO 5 Jeffries. What's Jeffries going to do? outslug foreman?

 

I think so. The thing is, Jeffries comes across to me as a guy who is not very hard to hit. Sharkey, Fitz, Choynski, all got heavy licks on him and battered his face to a pulp. Police Gazette often referred to Jeffries as very crude. Foreman in his prime could cut off the ring on anyone, and I don't see Jeffries doing much other than standing right in front of George taking punch after punch. How long can Jeffries withstand Foreman's bombardments? My guess is not very long.

Jeffries was at least a servicable technician. By using a counterpunching strategy he could make Foreman pay for some of thoose wide open swings.

He probably would not boar forward like Joe Frazier, instead choosing to stand off and box from his trademark crouch, perhaps even backing up to make Foreman come to him.

This would probably get interesting.

I'll got with Foreman because Jeffries never saw a George Foreman but Foreman saw fighters comparable to Jeffries. Perhaps in Jeffries's time he would stand a better chance if he survives the onslaught and Foreman tires. I'm just not too sure if he has the necessary capabilities to last against Big George. Fitzsimmons did hit hard for his size or any size but at 167-172 lbs he beat Jeffries up quite badly and I doubt Jeffries could have taken the kind of punishment from a brutal puncher like Foreman.

 

What fighter from Foremans era, or any for that matter, is remotley similar to Jeffries?

Please please please don't say Chuvalo.

 

Thats really about as simple as it gets.

The prospect of Jeffries outlasting Foreman over many rounds, is not impossible but he'd have to survive a storm that was by far, greater than anything that he ever even came close to experiencing. Foreman's stamina issues are very much overstated by most as well.. In a career that spanned until the age of 47 and consisted of over 80 fights, he was stopped on but one occasion, and that was against the greatest heavyweight of all time, who by the way, took a helacious beating himself to accomplish it... There are few in my opinion who could duplicate what Ali did, and Jeffries had neither the style nor physical capabilities to acheive such a feat..

 

Stylistically you won't find many but in stature yes. Foreman fought plenty of men his size, Jeffries didn't.

I tend to think that Chuvalo would have been a tough opponent to beat under early 1900's rules. He looked like he could go an infinite amount of rounds when he fought Ali. The man kept coming despite absorbing a beating.
