Why Didn't Floyd Take The Same Approach Against De La Hoya???

IMO he could have definitely pressed the attack far more frequently against the still live but clearly slower and inferior fighter in Hoya. Though he has a great jab and overall left hand, he still wouldn't have presented the threats that Mosley did (mainly the powerful right hand). It was quit evident from the start that all Hoya was trying to accomplish was to try and attempt to keep him at the end of his jab and swamp him with shoe shine shots, so why allow him? Even in their actually fight he had some of his best moments where he was coming forward and having success landing. I remember him standing right in from of Oscar and landing a quick, hard 1-2 combination and Hopkins jumping out of his seat yelling "Oh, ****!!!". Ironically, that performance is the main reason for most of disdain that Floyd receives for his "safety 1st" style. Had he chose to come forward and stand in the middle of the ring more often, which he was quite capable of doing, I doubt he receives the criticism that he does today. Arguably the worst outing of his pro career.

 

Mayweather didn't know how he would handle the weight. And i believe he gave oscar more respect than he needed to. But it was the biggest fight in his career, he just wanted the win, he wasn't worried about the performance.

 

His first time in a new weight divison.

If he marketed himself properly after beating Oscar he would become a star.

He took the approach that would get him safely to his goal.

 

The fight was at 154, when he had only very recently moved to 147. He hadn't really filled out at the weight. DLH had probably 15 pounds on him in that fight. Maybe he could have done what he did to Shane, but I doubt it, not at that stage in his career. He needed to grow into the new weight, and even then that was still a division up from WW.

He wasn't fully comfortable at 147, let alone 154 and conceding to every demand in the book. Still he won comfortably, and now you can see he is fully comfortable at 147.

 

He couldn't, he'd be walking into shots.

 

in all honesty i think hes had enough of people saying his fights are boring and hes come back to prove those people wrong

 

Was that the only factor though? The only time he really seemed active was when Floyd compromised himself by backing into the ropes, Floyd owned him in middle of the ring, why not throw it into 5th gear?

Like most have already stated the weight may have definitely been a big issue, it just seemed while watching the fight that Floyd had so much he could have gave.

 

Jab and Oscar is one of the greatest combination punchers in his era. Even at his advanced stage against Floyd he was able to let his hands go.
