Joe Frazier vs. Rocky Marciano

That´s a bold statement. He certainly was one of the best but I think Jack Dempsey, Jack Johnson, Joe Louis and perhaps Jim Jeffries were better infighters.

 

Good match up. Marciano never fought anyone on Frazier level in terms of power, speed, or rank.

Style wise this is a fan's dream. When two aggressive forward moving types fight each other at heavyweight, my money is on the fighter with the better chin and power.

There might be multiple knockdowns in this fantasy match up, and I could see either man winning. I'll go with Marciano via mid to late round TKO, as think Frazier's chin was suspect vs. punchers.

Not too many would pick Walcott especially at that time in his career (10-7 in his last 17 bouts). I think we went over that many times. Also, Rocky is very hard to rate because of his record. Some boxing experts rate him very high because of it, in the top 5, and others very low, because of who he beat, outside the top 10. I still rate him in my top 10 but at the lower end, so I am somewhat in the middle when it comes to Rocky. Everytime his name comes up, I know if I give my opinion, some people on this forum will jump on me for it and others will support it, BUT it's all in fun.

 

Probably but IMO Jersey Joe at his best has a chance against every hw. With a proper managed career he would be greater than both Louis and Ali imo.

I´m one of those who rank Marciano high. And I consider the 70s a tad overrated - or overhyped may fit better perhaps.

 

I respect that, BUT Frazier would be the best puncher Rocky ever went against too. I also think if Foreman hit Rocky as he did Joe, he too would have had the same results.

Would be a classic all action war ! No doubt about it. Picking a winner in this one really concentrates the mind. However,I do n't like sitting on the fence,so after a lot of thought,I would say that the winner would be Smokin' Joe. Providing his chin stood up to Rocky's opening onslaught,Frazier's extra weight would start to tell halfway through the fight. Frazier tko by round 12. Rocky's propensity to bleed would also be a factor.

 

Hm, I don´t think Joe hit harder than Walcott. He would hit more often due to his higher workrate. But I think Marciano has the defence and chin to take it. And he would back. Even harder than he would get hit. With both hands.

Foreman could take out Marciano early. Definitly. At the very least he would knock him down. But if Archie Moore couldn´t finish him, I wonder if Big George could. And Rocky would never show up in the shape Frazier did against George. Don´t really know. Stylewise Foreman has a big advantage but with Rocky´s will, determination and chin ... probably still Foreman.

 

You have to be kidding. Walcott landed one of the Greatest one punch KO's in boxing history but he was not in Joe's class as far as punching power goes.

 

Well, I was thinking about him beeing brought along like for example Louis was. He probably would have taken over during WW2 and ruled until Marciano would come around.

Yep, I know, I read it in another thread. I´m a bit jealous I must say. What I was talking about was not Walcott beating Louis and Ali at their best - albeit I think he would have a chance - but him surpassing their achievements. I think he had the potential to do this.

 

Nah, I´m serious. I think Frazier had power but most of his damage comes from accumulation. I think Walcott had slightly more power but did less damage overall because he threw less punches.
Neither one is a big one punch knock out puncher like Foreman.
