Is Paul Williams overrated. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy watching him fight. Lately I've started noticing him poppin up in the top 4 of people P4P lists and that got me wondering if his skill warrants that ranking. It seems to me that he is not that skilled a fighter. It seems as if his amazing stamina, workrate and size have just overwhelmed his opponents. Thats what makes him so hard to defeat. He throws 1000 punches per fight and wins decisions by outworking his opponents. Is his skill overrated? Sure he can dominate Welters given his size advantage over them but would he be able to do the same to Pavlik sized Middleweights? He is pretty high on the P4P list, does he deserve it. Using your natural gifts and talents is a skill, so no, Paul Williams has had some good performances with his style, so I dont think he is overrated, although I dont think he should be rated higher than Sergio Martinez..
No he is not as technically skilled as a lot of other fighters. But he not only makes up for it with his reach and height. Those are just cop-out excuses from people who will not like him no matter what. He also has the highest workrate and best stamina in the game. Plus he has a really good chin, and a relentless, courageous attitude. These things (along with his size, reach, and southpaw stance) make him a tough task for any fighter, and more than make up for any technical deficiencies.
Whoever thinks he's overrated are not true boxing fans. Williams has fought and beat most fighters that many big names won't fight with.
"Over rated" is a relative term. Back when people claimed he was the best guy from 147-168 he was ridiculously over rated. Right now alot of that has calmed down, so I don't think he is over rated at present. PDub is gradually building a very respectable resume'. There are only a couple guys from 147-160 that I would pick to beat him, and my picks would be based mostly on stylistic issues.
I have a feeling that he would be weight drained at 147, and little Floyd would pick him apart far worse than Quintana did. I'd like to see him shut the **** up, settle in at 154, and make it Paul's house.
The P4P list right now is in a state of flux. Outside of Mayweather and Pacquiao, there really aren't any super-experienced guys who aren't somewhat or totally on the downturn. It's difficult, based on recent performances, to put these stalwarts above Williams: Mosley, Hopkins, J.M. Marquez, and Cotto. Those four have had P4P Top 10 presence for a while, but each is starting to slip. At the same time, there are a number of young, very talented fighters who don't have the resume that Williams does at this point: Donaire, Bradley, Ward, Lopez, Gamboa, etc. The kind of guys with similar levels of talent and resume to Williams are not many in number. You have Dawson and Martinez most prominently. It just doesn't seem right to have guys like Bute, Haye, Adamek, Montiel, Darchinyan, or Klitschko ahead of him.
