Joe Frazier vs. Rocky Marciano

You must be smoking crack if you use words like fear and Chase when it comes to Marciano...That man had no fear

 

Good point...Frazier had trouble with guys his size...and the crouch was a *****

 

Again, he fought Oscar in his 12th pro bout. Frazier fought Oscar again just over 2 years later and he won by 8 and 10 points on 2 of the judges score cards.

He didn't have much trouble with Quarry, Chuvalo, Doug Jones or Machen either and they were all just 6 feet tall.

Ted Lowry was a short heavyweight and Rocky had trouble beating him and that was his 21st bout.

 

Fraziers much better against short/small HW's than big ones. That much is pretty obvious, at least imo.

 

All true but none of them does fight small like Marciano did. And none of them is similar in style to Marciano or as good as him. There is nobody on Frazier´s record that gives you an indication of how he would do against the Rock. Same for the other way round.

 

I find it funny when so many people clam Frazier's chin is suspect, but when Marciano get's put down by Moore and Walcott, who were small Heavyweights, his chin is considered rock hard. This has always baffled me.

 

Difference is, Frazier got knocked out. Marciano didn´t.

I'm not picking anyone here , just saying this is a hell of a tough match up for Frazier as well ..

 

Frazier's never been KO'd. TKO'd yes by Ali Manilla and George Foreman, 73 and 76.

 

Maybe because Frazier was down for an 8 count in his second fight against a nobody while Marciano was down less than that in his entire pro career.

 

If Joe got "rocked" and felt Daniels punches. Woah, long night against Marciano.

 

Joe fraziers head would be marciano's biggest asset in this fight. Frazier might last longer in this fight than in a fight against tyson but the end result would be the same. Even though rock was 20 pounds lighter than frazier he had a big edge in 2 fisted ko power. The "brockton blockbuster" concusses "smokin Joe" within 5.

 

Joe always had good head movement and Rocky would have found it hard to hit solid, on the other hand, Rocky didn't move his head that much and Joe would have found that an easy target.

Most boxers that fought Joe said that he was hard to hit because of his head bobbing and weaving all the time.

Stockton (1977 p 92) wrote that Frazier "… was an excellent body puncher and relied primarily on his powerful left hook. He exerted constant pressure and was fairly hard to hit with his bobbing and weaving style. He had no trouble with cuts and took a good punch."

Houston (1975 p 126) said "Frazier is murder at close and medium-range, ripping vicious hooks and uppercuts to the body and switching to the head, often snorting and grunting as he punches."


Litsky (1975 p 111) described Frazier as an "aggressive, relentless fighter who withstood punishment so that he could get close enough to his opponent to deal out punishment."


Teddy Brenner, former matchmaker for Madison Square Garden, said "Frazier throws more punches and throws them faster than Marciano" (see McCallum 1974 p 343).
