Will Saul "Canelo" Alvarez become a "Star" in the Sport of Boxing?

He has beat no one as of yet. Why is it that everyone annoints an undefeated fighter as the next coming of who knows what? He got caught with a shot by a known lightweight puncher. Could've happened to anyone.

Although a bit premature, he needs to fight a determined and focused Zab Judah or Alfonso Gomez before anyone can even start make any assumptions. Whatever happend to Francisco Bojado?

It's easy to look good against lesser competition. Just ask Mosely.

 

Jose Benavidez is perhaps the most talented young prospect out there. He has movement and raw talent that will make him into a champion. He looked amazing in sparring, and hes only 17 so hes not anywhere near where he will be in a few years.

I expect them both to remain undefeated, and benavidez is going to be a champion probably of multiple weight classes, and maybe P4P in the top 5 in the next decade.

 

you beat me to it, i was just gonna post bojados name,,, a lot of hype and never became anything.. wasnt bojado and miguel cotto supposed to have a great mega fight when both became champion... people were talking about cotto vs bojado before they even signed to fight professional.. lets wait and see

He's pretty much a star in Mexico which is very rare among teenagers in boxing, especially with no amateur achievements such as an Olympic Gold. Even if it'll take 3 years to develop into an elite fighter - which is no guarantee - Canelo will be still just 22 and he'll appear on major Mexican and American - therefore world-wide - television shows in the upcoming months. He's got the style, the looks, the heart, the punch and looks like the talent to go very far, so he could be HUGE with proper developement and dedication. But only time will tell.

 

I think alverez will be a star weather or not he achieves P4P status........he is exciting to watch, and that goes a long way with both casual and hardcore fans

Kid will be entertaining, but he will not be entertaining for long, he is going to have to make Jr. MW soon, WW is out of the picture, the question at Jr. MW then becomes his punch resistance and size. His body is going to betray him and the hype he has is going to hurt his career even more.

 

The jump from WW to JMW could be considered the most difficult as you go from 8-10 ounce gloves. This guy is green and unproven at WW let alone JMW.

The question right now is does Cintron even have a chance against a focused Williams. He is -400 right now.

I don't give Cintron much of a chance.

 

I think Alvarez will be a two division champ and a star... but expecting him to be a Great would be to premature.

 

I like the way it looks for Canelo at 147. But you are absolutely correct, he is going to get bigger and will need a lot more game north of that. I think they will need start tweaking his style and turn him into a pure boxer-counter puncher. I could see him being very successful with Nacho Berstein with a Marquez or Morales type style. If he stays at 147 or 154 he'll be a star

 

i think he definitely has what it takes to be a champ...He is a smart fighter with great technique, punches and powerful...... he is only 19 yrs old.... and he is going to get a lot better and smarter i see him in the future fighting against the elites

 

i predict another bojado,, he's already making the money has the fame.. why the hell will he continue to work hard.. he has the marqueting and promotion behind him they'll build his record up fighting tomato cans but as soon as he raises the level of competition he'll be done.. if i was him i would do what chavez jr. is doing keep making money fighting nobodies

He's got potential, but I can't get over that he's still just 19. There's no real way to predict just how far he'll actually wind up going from here.

That said, the kid puts on a great fight. I hope he doesn't get rushed too fast, burn out, or get complacent but you just never know when you're dealing with someone who's got the backing of Golden Boy, but can't even legally celebrate with a bottle of champagne in Vegas when he wins for another 2 years. To put it in perspective, Alexander and Khan two of the names I think of first when I think of excellent young fighters, and they're still 4 years older than Alvarez.
