All this talk about Mayweather as an all time great at welter is absurd. Has anyone taken the time to review his opposition ? When he fought them: Oscar 34 Bal 35 Marquez 36 Mosley 38 and jr. welter Hatton ..... How is Mayweather an all time great welter ?
He's not an all time great welterweight, i think people are speculating whether or not he could compete with welters from yesteryear, not whether he has compiled a resume to be ranked highly in the division with regards to legacy. Of course he doesn't rank high at 147 pounds historically. I doubt he'd beat any of the top level greats there either.
It looks better if you post their pfp rankings and titles at the time when they fought. (Oscar was still really good with no belt or pfp ranking.)
These days 35 is the new 32. I suppose if Pacquaio agrees to Olympic style drug testing, Mayweather will final get his due. Until then he is un-defeated, and the #1 or #2 pound for pound fighter in boxing.
Lesson one in becoming underrated: Fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. Lesson one in becoming overrated: Don't fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Every generation has fighters that get burnt out early for various reasons.......Morales through his ring wars and the many times he had to severely dehydrate to make weight....... .....and Vargas through one brutal beatdown at the hands of one Felix "Tito" Trinidad, in which Vargas was never the same. Fighters like Pipino Cuevas and Wilfredo Benitez were washed up before they hit 30.
Vargas was really rushed into that fight with Tito and he was soundly taking Tito apart in brutal fashion before all the low blows and cheating, those shots to the nuts permently took Vargas's legs from him.Benitez was a champion at 16 and fought great against other legends for over a decade.I cant argue with you about Morales, and Papino nearly got killed by "The Hit Man" all these great fighters you mentioned had justifiable reason for being burnt out.
