One of the great ironies of boxing history is that Matt's greatness did not end after a war like this, but after the surprisingly easy win over Jerry Martin, mainly because life changing events outside of boxing snuffed out his inner fire. Both Matthew and Marvin actually rose to greater heights after their two wars. Saad Muhammad got into the IBHOF largely as a result of what he did after Indianapolis, while Johnson may yet become enshrined as a result of becoming the division's first three time champion, winning it twice more after their rematch.
Chagaev was never the same after the hell he had to go through in the Valuev fight from a man twice is size. Some people say Hep, some say Achilles. But it was really just the few punches Valuev landed while Shaggy ran for life. Nobody is ever the same after Valuev. Look at Haye. Even slow Ruiz was able to hit the quick Haye after Valuev damaged his brain and took a notch off his reflexes.
