Hopkins solidified himself as an ATG during his middleweight run and the latter part of his career.

Calzaghe just didn't do enough, he has good wins against Lacy, Kessler, Eubank, and Hopkins, but you expected more from him.

Hopkins faced fighters that were on the same level as the fighters Joe was facing, the primary difference? They weren't Americans.

Hopkins has not beaten as many current/former champions as Joe Calzaghe has. His best wins have come against smaller fighters with the exception of Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson. He has a lesser win/loss percentage per fighter fought than Calzaghe too

They practically have the same career. Got a title early, had a number of defenses against good but not great fighters, with a scattered few who were close to great.

Any time Hopkins stepped up against someone big and talented, he had issues. Their fight itself should tell you, Hopkins style was never one to beat Calzaghe. Calzaghe was further away from the style that had made him a name than Hopkins was

Joe Calzaghe, arguably, by beating Bernard Hopkins, has a greater win in his resume than Bernard Hopkins ever got. He was the one moving up in weight to take on the common consensus champ at the next level.


If you came to that conclusion, you'd be arguing with an idiot, my friend. Calzaghe was favored to beat Hopkins just as he was favored to be Jones. By comparison, Hopkins was a 3-1 underdog against Hopkins. And even though everyone craps all over Pavlik now, at the time he was a respected fighter. Much better win than Joe fight he was supposed to win. Especially when you consider the fact that he got dropped and he barely won the fight. All you goofballs saying Calzaghe smashed Hopkins are clearly deranged.

 

Calzaghe was favored to beat Hopkins because he's a better fighter than Hopkins and had a bigger fan base. Hopkins had "struggled" with Wright and although he dispatched Tarver easily, everyone felt "age" would get to him.

"Age" wasn't the reason Hopkins lost the fight, inability to work against Calzaghe's style is the reason he lost the fight. Hopkins proved that in his next fight when he dismantled a come forward, heavy hands, high stamina fighter in Pavlik.

Calzaghe did smash Hopkins, he landed more shots on Hopkins than Hopkins has ever been hit with and had the guy fouling and all sorts to try and stop the loss. It was the first time Hopkins had been outboxed since Jones Jr.

Remove the knock down in that fight and arguably you've got a 116-112 or a 117-111 scorecard. That against an elite boxer/counter puncher who spoils boxing styles is a smashing.
