Merchant just said that Pavlik won't fight @ 160 ever again.

During the Williams/Cintron post-fight talk, Larry Merchant said that he learned that Martinez and Pavlik won't have a rematch. He added that Kelly Pavlik weighed 12 pounds over the Middleweight limit ONE DAY before the weigh-in of his fight with Martinez and said that Kelly will never fight @ 160 again.

Don't know if this is already known, but it's damn interesting and a bit shocking. Didn't know Pavlik had that much trouble making 160.

 

Good to see, there's no reason for those two to fight again, it would look like the first fight, only worse.

Sounds about right. Pavlik is 6'2, and even as lanky as he is, there is no way in hell 160 is a comfortable weight for him.

You go back and look at his record, from 2001 he would routinely come into fights a few pounds over 160

It gets harder every year you get older. I figure he will be fighting at 168, 175 in the future. His walk around weight is probably close to 190 pounds.

 

How effective do you all think that he will be against the top guys at 168?

 

Pavlik gets destroyed at the higher weights. His only asset was size and power. That asset is seriously compromised at 168. It's nowhere to be found at 175.

 

If he does move up I wonder if they will make a fight between him and Bute since Bute isn't in the tournament

 

He can beat almost anyone at 168. Ward and Bute would be the only ones who could crush him. He was winning that Martinez fight when a straight got him in the sweet spot corner of his eye and screwed up a good win. Martinez earned that victory, but don't act like Pavlik wasn't winning the fight going into the 9th round.

 

Good riddance. Let's hope he never fights again.

 

:nono Dirrell ****s his **** up too. Hell I'd favor everyone in the super six over Pavlik.

 

A fight with Froch and Pavlik would be a fun fight as well to watch

 

Would love to see him get in there with Arthur Abraham.

 

He'd still probably be a top 10 fighter at 175 where the talent pool's significantly more shallow than 168 is now. If I were him I'd just make the jump straight up there, fight a couple of cans, and acclimate to the weight class the right way.

 

I don't think Pavlik will fare well at 168 or 175, but stranger things have happened.

I think 168 would be especially bad for him though. Too much talent, too many guys who know how to use their feet well and use angles. Bute, Ward, Dirrell would all beat him imo, and Froch and Kessler would at least be tough fights.

 

Pavlik needs to win the rematch before he fights again - or else he's back to square one.
