Two Former World Lightweight Champions Over 15 Rounds

With big thanks to Rare Boxing for another amazing upload (I hadn't seen any of Nelson vs Wolgast before, although I know some have seen it before) I was actually quite surprised with Wolgast; throwing the right hand very nicely (especially as a stiff counter which looked jarring) and a frenetic two-fisted attack aside, his movement impressed me in places; I was expecting him to be completely one dimensional and a 'slugger' but he had some nice nuances and, even allowing for old film, fairly fast feet when moving. He reminded me of a cruder Tony Canzoneri, although possibly because he throws hooks from his hips at odd rhythms.

So how would he get on with the quintessential boxer puncher Arguello? The Matador, arguably the greatest puncher of all time, tough, intelligent, graceful.

The exchanges would no doubt be brutal, horrific and beautiful at the same time but whilst Wolgast seems the kind of opponent Arguello would favour (mainly aggressive; shorter) could he stunt Arguello's rhythm with his odd style? Would Arguello be able to land enough leather to get a decision compared to Wolgast, or would he sharpshoot one of his pinpoint bombs down the pipe and take Wolgast out?

Wolgast wears his gloves, Arguello wears his.

Any thoughts on Wolgast? His alltime standing? His performance in this footage? Shame the whole fight isn't available:D

Maybe if Tony Ayala was involved this thread might get some feedback.

Right, just watched Wolgast vs Moran.

Wolgast looks abit of a rough customer, he looks very strong and likes to fight out of a clinch or inside. He showcased a good jab when getting into range and inside looked very strong and landed good shots down the middle to head and body. His cross armed defence looked fairly decent but Moran was finding a home for that left hook to the head and body, so he was hittable. He also showcased nice little bursts of speed where he would change direction and land afew shots.

When he got Moran hurt he took him out very quickly, but I'm not sure how big a puncher he is.

Arguello loved a come forward fighter but up at Lightweight he did struggle abit with them due to their strength (or his lack of strength at Lightweight). He was however very technically correct at Lightweight and still a massive puncher. Wolgast definitly has the strength to cause him problems as he jabs his way into range into the clinch and bulls Arguello back. But I like Arguello to be finding a home for counter left hooks as Wolgast came in, on the inside Wolgast might be moving Arguello backwards but I think Arguello could get an uppercut off, as Wolgast liked to drop his head inside and was a sitter for an uppercut. The quick changes of direction from Wolgast again would cause problems but he didnt do this near enough IMO.

Due to Wolgast's hittable nature and the fact he is coming straight too Arguello, I think Arguello is going to be picking him off with that left hook and right uppercut. I can definitly see a stoppage but since Wolgast is a big tough strong Lightweight I will give him the benefit of the doubt and Arguello wins a very exciting UD

These kinds of cross-era hypothetical matchups are pretty ridiculous, to be honest.

    Whys that?

I admit I dont really think pre 1920s boxing was 'modern' but Wolgast looks fairly modern and shows some tools that would be useful today.

Too many variables to consider, really. Different rules, different regulations, different technical tactics and emphasis, etc. That combined with a general lack of conclusive footage makes for a pretty futile effort. If you're just doing it for fun, that's cool. I just wouldn't make too much of it, either way.

Thats why I went for Arguello. Didn't way to pick someone who Wolfast wouldn't be given any kind of shout against (Duran cough) but was impressed by the footage so put him in with as textbook an elite lightweight I could find that he might compete with.

What do you think of the Wolgast-Nelson footage? Seen it before?

I make nothing of H2H match ups, they are all just abit of fun to me.
