Since Williams, in his post-fight interview, called out Floyd and Pacquiao, I'll break this down for the fight-fans of East Side Boxing. Consider this a cursory view to be expanded upon if the fights ever actually do take place. After reviewing the fight, does anyone honestly believe Paul Williams has a chance against the counterpunching genius of Floyd Mayweather? It is plain as day that Williams will eat counter after counter after counter ALL night long, round after round. His style is immeasurably sloppy. He leans in, has cumbersome upper body movement when he uses any, and he'd be up against the sharpest fighter in the fight game. Williams' volume punching is another thing people tout as something to trouble Floyd, but is this something we should really buy into? He throws high volume, low accuracy punches. He throws low percentage punches time after time and at points made Cintron look like Whitaker, dipping and diving and avoiding shots. Against Floyd, if the fight ever happens, I'll officially go on record here stating that, if the fight goes 12 rounds, Williams does not land above 15% of his punches thrown. If he does, I'll self-suspend myself for a month from the site. Lets consider another factor that would play out against Williams in a potential Floyd vs. Williams fight. This would be the fact that Williams eats straight shots down the pipe like candy. After Williams vs. Quintana I, we heard people say, "Williams has improved, he's fixed those problems, just look at Williams vs. Quintana II! Williams answered emphatically!" This just isn't true, at least not in terms of answering the questions that were raised about him. A fast knockout is great, but it really tells us nothing. Williams made no improvements with regard to his defense, as has been evidenced since then in every single fight he's had. Against Cintron in the early going he limited his punch output, it seemed, with a higher guard at times, and that just led to him not getting into the rhythm he likes to be in. So he's got two choices against Floyd: Throw a lower amount of punches and just get outplayed, or throw a lot of punches and eat the counters whilst trying to land a bomb of his own. Official Prediction: Floyd wins a very unanimous decision over twelve, dropping no rounds after Round 3. He'd take it easy early, figure things out, and run away to a ridiculously wide points victory. Don't discount the potential for a shut-out. My analysis of Pacquiao vs. Williams will be much briefer, having already laid out the groundwork above. The straight lefts that troubled Williams in his loss to Quintana reared their ugly head again against Martinez. They would do the same against Pacquiao, whose straight left down the pipe is known to cause serious bodily injury. Official Prediction: Pacquiao by stoppage. Williams has shown to have a decent chin, but Pacquiao cracks it since he'd be taking free shots on it all night. Funniest moment of the night: Cintron being carefully put on a stretcher with his head secured in place while he CLEARLY wasn't even injured. He looked frustrated, but he couldn't exactly just get up after having already forfeited the fight. For the look of it, he had to go along with riding the stretcher. Embarrassing for him, I'm sure, as it was embarrassing to watch, laughing though I was.
I don't see anything wrong with that. Good post. Paul Williams could potentially cause mountainous problems for the likes of Pacquiao and Mayweather, but he's a warrior at heart and is seemingly incapable of fighting a disciplined 12 rounds of Boxing. Cintron embarrassed himself, his country, and I saw a picture of his wife, she should go out and find herself a real man...like Mr.T.
1. Thanks, my friend. 2. Well, I just wonder whether Williams could even make a transition to a really disciplined fighter. What I would LIKE to see him do is work behind a disciplined, educated jab, not just a pushing one that sets up a big left. Williams doesn't actually USE his height. If he did, he would be much more difficult. 3. Who could argue with this?
Care to elaborate? Break it down for me. I could see Williams having more potential to "win rounds" for Pacquiao, but I can't see him actually being in control of the fight at any point and at some point he tastes the canvas, and probably for good.
Who really cares ? I think all signs point to Pacquiao-Margarito and I doubt Floyd would risk his zero agianst a guy whos 6'1 and never shown to be any kind of draw or own any big fan base. Plus Williams dont belong at 147 hes just to big the best fights in boxing are Pacquiao-Mayweather and Williams-Martinez II.
As many have stressed, Williams has a stupidly long reach for a 154-160lbs fighter, and for him to not use that to his advantage is just stupid. Cintron was winning the fight until he decided to try and manipulate the rules, he probably figured along with myself that the longer the fight went on the more Williams would start finding a home for his shots. Williams was also getting lit up early against Martinez, but he tightened the deficit considerably as the fire wore on. It's a double-edged sword for Paul. If he starts to fight more disciplined behind an educated jab, that isn't going to make him more marketable than he currently is...but if he intends to take an exciting, warrior-like mentality into the ring with either Floyd or Manny, he'll be rudely awakened.
No one said anything about 147lbs. Floyd and Pacquiao beat Williams in any weight division they decide to fight at. It's a matter of styles, and extra weight isn't going to help Williams. It'll slow him down and make him look even more cumbersome. Edit: If you honestly don't really care, then take a walk. You contributed nothing with your post.
PW is overhyped to a huge degree almost as much as Margacheato used to be, Agree 100 % with the post. Williams just isn't that good, he may be able to take Cotto or Berto buts about as Far as he could go, PBF embarrasses him and wins every round, Pac stops him, as does Mosley as long as he doesn't run out of gas.
1. Every single time he fights I intently watch to see if he'll improve the many defects he has. Unfortunately, it's pretty much the same guy in the ring each time out. I would MAKE the guy get used to throwing a long jab in the gym. 2. We got robbed by the fight not reaching a natural conclusion. It was an interesting pairing. Despite his mental failings, Cintron has some nice physical ability that could trouble Williams as it was early. Good opportunity for Williams to showcase himself with a win, as well. 3. Problem with that is I believe Martinez got tired late and couldn't execute to the best of his ability (I believe he took the fight on short notice, correct me if I'm wrong). To state the obvious, Mayweather and Pacquiao wouldn't have that problem. 4. That's the sad reality for Williams. It's too bad, because you really feel for him when you watch the post-fight interview and he just looks dejected, like he wanted to put on a show and got that opportunity taken from him.
Now that you mention it, I wish I had added an analysis of Mosley vs. Williams while I was at it, since Mosley and Williams would present a very different make-up compared to Floyd/Pacquiao vs. Williams. I agree, though, that the 41-year old Mosley of today beats Williams.
It's why I really, really like Williams. He wants to put on a show. It's crazy to me that the guy doesn't get more exposure, he put on an entertaining fight with Margarito, he blasted out Quintana in double quick time, his battle with Martinez was extraordinary, and he isn't even remotely unlikeable. Like to throw a lot of punches, and doesn't mind taking his own licks. Not to sure how anyone could dislike this man, but his mentality will probably be his undoing unfortunately. Goodluck to him, regardless.
I'll have to disagree with you on that Marnoff. 41 year old Shane Mosley was feeling the pace relatively early on against Mayweather, and Williams will be throwing close to 70-100 punches a round. He wouldn't be able to keep up with Williams, Shane's days of being considered among the best at 147 are well and truely over in my estimation. At 41, it's hardly surprising either.
PWs main problems are: A. He has ZERO defense (even worse than Margacheato) B. He doesn't use his height at all. C. He Is sloppy. I just don't see a fighter as flawed as Williams going that far, especially if he goes above MW, Where guys like Ward, Direll, Bute etc. Will wear him out.
Was actually just having fun with TheGreat with my 41-year old remark. Shane's 38, but I've been after TheGreat for the past week for overstating Mosley's age. That said, you might be right. I wouldn't bet money on that fight since Mosley doesn't have the tools that would make it an easy night for Floyd and Pacquiao. Williams' volume and physical size might actually give him the win against Mosley, and that's not necessarily just because of Mosley's age. Those two have a good scrap at any stage in their careers. Mosley likes to fight and really get his hands dirty. Williams does the same. The two go toe to toe and both eat some shots. It's a fight I'd like to see so I would know whether you're correct about Mosley being done with the best at 147lbs... which is where the fight would have to be, in this one. I don't like Mosley's odds above 147lbs.
