I know why he can be disliked. He talks too damn much. He keeps acting like people are dodging him but the reality is he is no one and thinks he deserves the big fights when he hasn't even settled in one weight class. Not to mention he does plenty of dodging on his own. Clottey dzurwhatever, instant Margarito rematch, instant Martinez rematch. He only agreed to rematch Margarito after he beat Cotto and Martinez after he beat Pavlik. He is also very limited skillwise. Just his damn size that helps.
I believe MArtinez got a full camp preparing for Paul, he was Paul's backup in case Kelly ducked again, it was Paul who only got 2 weeks to prepare for Martinez.
I'm with you on that. I generally avoid betting on boxing because I just love watching the fights and scoring them without having anything at stake. Once you put money on something, it changes.
...That's exactly what scares me. He was taking counters and couldn't pinpoint shots even when he was throwing a low number of punches. Doesn't bode well for him. It suggests he can only fight with volume.
Ahh, interesting. I couldn't remember the exact details but vaguely remembered something about someone not having a lot of time to prepare. Thanks for that.
Ya, the "people dodge me" stuff gets really tiring, that's for sure. "Most feared fighter" is one of the most tired phrases in boxing.
People have dodged him that is a fact. When he was WBO champ, Cotto outright ducked him, he was supposed to fight the winne rof Margo-Williams. Cintron faked a hand injury and said he coudln't fight him the first time at 147, he then got KO'd again by Margo. Margo would not fight him after he beat Cintron or after he beat Cotto. Berto and his management said after beating Urango or Cherry that Berto would never face a tall WW like Paul or Margo. The only fighter at 147 not to duck Paul was Clottey, and HBO wouldn't pay for Paul and Clottey to fight, but they didn't mind shelling out the bucks for Cotto - Clottey, go figure.
Bro, if he fights the way he did last night then Mayweather would counter him silly all night long, however if he decides to throw 100 punches per round, the fight becomes a lot more interesting. Even a defensive genius would have problems with such high volume and the only reason Cintron looked good defensively is because Williams did not elect to go with volume.
Williams needs to get himself out there more if he wants big fights. Build a fanbase, make himself bankable. Fight everyone you can fight and the fights WILL come. Just keep winning. Losing to Quintana, for instance, didn't help him out any.
Hmm, but when Williams does throw more punches, he just makes himself a target. He has absolutely no regard for defense when he's throwing. As Merchant (I think it was him) said, Williams uses his offense as his defense. For once, Merchant got something right while under the influence. The problem is, being a one-track fighter gets you figured out.
True. It's hard to believe that a guy who is 39-1 and has wins over Margarito and Winky has no following. His humble country boy personality is the complete antithesis of Mayweather so maybe he should, in addition to fighting and beating everyone, take a page out of the Mayweather book of self promotion and start talking to the point that people want to shut him up!
