This is the first one which popped into my mind, but Godoy wasn't from Argentina. Let's see what Burt says.

You know Joe Louis actually fits this category, as it is rather vague at this point without more clues.

I dunno. Tommy Farr might be a dark horse candidate here.

Primo Carnera made a comeback after more than 7 years... and was knocked out by Luigi Musina. Only I'm not sure Musina was that big an idol in Italy at the time??

And Benny Leonard certainly fits the description, as he came back after 7 years - only to finally get knocked out by Jimmy McLarnin.

But I guess, we're not talking about an American??

And then again McLarnin was Canadian - so we can forget about Leonard in relation to this question, I suppose.

Bukkake , you flattened me in the first round. ARTURO GODOY it was !
It is true Godoy was born in Chile, but he became so poular in Argentina, and he was a hero after his first loss to Joe Louis...In 1936 he kod,the old idol of Argentina Luis Angel Firpo, who after a ten year layoff was making an ill-fated comeback..
Sidenote -I once saw a older Godoy in Stillmans Gym in the 1940s...Powerful guy with a scarred face...He was just as tough as Chuvalo of later years, methinks...b.b.
