Can we discuss the pros and cons of the standing eight count?

In my opinion it is a really useful tool when it comes to assessing whether a fighter can continue or not. For instance, Roy Jones v Danny Green - ref could have taken a count and seen how Roy was... would mean that there was a lot less controversy and fighters can't ***** as much.

Standing 8 counts sometimes 'save' the fighter, or are done very prematurely, so it's easy to abuse it to help the favorite, or hometown fighter.
I think it shouldn't be used anymore.

Yeah, i can see your point. In a perfect world it would be quite useful, but corrupt officials would take advantage of it

Typically I see it used when a guy is against the ropes and kinda looks like the ropes are the only thing holding him up, usually I agree with it then.

Standing 8's would help stop controversial stoppages.

I hate the standing 8 count. My hatred of it goes back to an amateur fight of mine, where I got punched in the face. The ref immediately gave me the standing 8. I'm like , "wtf, I get a standing 8 because one clear punch got through?" Later on in that same fight, I had the opponent in the corner as was doing some repeated ferocious pummeling. Did he get a standing 8? NOPE! Obviously that ref was a biased ******... but it sullied the standing 8 count in my opinion forever.

The standing 8 really is not needed. The ref can stop the fight and give the TKO if a guy is in too much trouble.

Fighters are allowed to take a 'knee', Dunno why but they rarely do it. Froch vs Taylor after the First KD if Taylor took a 'knee' he probably would of won the fight

One thing some fighters should do more often it would save them from stoppages. I've seen plenty of incidents however where I guy knows his limit takes a knee and the ref stops it kinda like Cotto vs Corly

Yep... but I think the reason fighters don't do it even if they're in huge trouble is because they can't think straight on that moment... they go into 'survival mode' and then either survive it or get blasted away. That's one reason I don't like the standing 8, because then they get saved from the punches they would have received if the ref didn't break in wich is unfair for the 'dealing' fighter. If the punches end up beïng to severe, and the fighters health is in danger the ref can step in and stop it, if he can box (pull and grab mostly) his way out no problem. If he goes down no problem, but let the fight move on.
