When you have lost to the fighter of the decade and to a guy who supposedly fought him with bricks in his hands, I think to a guy like that you have to give him the benefit of the doubt in whether or not he can become one of the top dogs in the game again. Its funny that I feel this way cause I used to hate Miguel Cotto with a passion a few year back, now Im rooting for the guy.
yeah, as much as i love cotto, hard to see him being the same as he was 2008. that margarito fight took a piece of cotto out of him sad to say, if not physically- the most definetely mentally. he ll never have the same confidence and aura and self belief as he did then. being made to submit like that, whether he was cheating or not- has to play on your mind in the deepest corners of your psyche. we ve seen it before- with other great great fighters, like hatton, tzsyu, hamed - fighters that still had careers- but after they suffered a loss in a brutal war- they lost some of themselves also.
cotto is one of the best in this era but after the beating he got from that scumbag margarito he ain't never been the same his fight against mosley was his peak look at his speed and footwork in that fight
He can definitely bounce back. But although he's one of my favs, I have to agree that he won't be 'the man' @ 147.
Anything is capable of happening in boxing and the unexpected happens quite alot. If Miguel can mentally focus on the task at hand and believe in himself, he can bring back his old self again, but he needs to bring back his confidence most of all and not dwell on his defeats, but become better because of them. I believe before Margarito he was on the level to compete with Floyd, but after it he was noticeably not as strong physically or as fast or focused as he was against Mosley. I think only he knows what he must do to reach that level again. I don't think it's a matter if he can it's a matter if he wants to.
If Cotto can do waht Barrera did he can have a new start and still be capable of great things. He is smart enough to do this and what Stewart says Cotto loves to learn. Barerra did no use the jab prior to his defeats to Jones, when the new and improved Barerra came along he threw probably 25-35 jabs a round. Now Cotto has a good strong jab already, he only needs to trhow much more instead of only 12 or so per round. If he does this he could be very hard to beat. Only difference is Barerra had a better chin, but I think Cotto has all the tools to become a true boxer puncher and he has the right man in his corner to transform him into one.

either may or pac or maybe both will retire after their fight, after which cotto is 100% capable of being the man at 147. I think he is also capable of becoming the man at 154, a division that stands to get weaker if martinez stays at 160 and especially if paul williams relocates to 160 permanently.
Paul Williams would kick his ass at 154. Hell, I'm not sure he could beat Spinks at this stage. All depends on how he looks against Foreman.
Yeah, same as the comments above. I would love to see him bounce-back but I don't think its going to happen.
I don't see why people are writing him off. He's only 29 years old, he has two losses. He still looked good against Manny despite losing. In fact he gave Pacquiao his toughest fight since moving up to welterweight. I think he should stay at welter and take on some of the top contenders like Berto. He shouldn't have any problem with Yuri Foreman.
