Who agrees that KZ was an overrated fighter? I believe he is one of the most overrated fighters of the last 20 yrs. He lacks all the requirements of a great fighter. First, the two losses of his career were severely one-sided losses. Plus he never tried to avenge either loss. He never beat a A+ fighter in their prime. I recall he bragged about beating a old and way past his prime Chavez as if he had defeated him in his prime. His biggest wins were against Shamba Mitchell and Judah. Grove, Ruelas, Gonzalez, and Bramble, Leijas. Small fighters and some past their prime.

Regarding Mitchell (never a very good fighter in my opinion) a rematch was made considering the first fight he stopped Mitchell in 7 there was no need for a rematch and it was not even wanted by the public. I recall the rematch was post-poned due to an injury and instead of just forgoing the rematch when he got better to fight better fighters he still fought Mitchell and the outcome was a forgone conclusion.

He never moved up to welterweight a weight at which he could of easily carried and his power would of also carried over, but he stayed at jrwelter were the competition was slim. Most of the big money fights were at welter weight so why did he not make at least one attempt to move up in weight?

Most fighters who loss want to avenge those losses against the fighters who defeated them KZ did note ever attempt to do this. He did not even give out any indication he would like to avenge his losses.

To be great you gotta at least try and avenge your losses. You have got to call out and fight the best. And if your body allows you to a great fighter usually would want to move up in weight and conquer an additional division. None of the above for KZ.

Yes to a degree, but you have to remember how badly he beat JC Chavez and that's probably why people rate him very highly.

i wouldnt go so far to say overrated, but I have always said that a prime hatton gives a prime tszyu problems based on styles, and that seems to be a minority opinion on here.....Kostya flat out quit on his stool against ricky, that speaks volumes...

If tszyu would have beaten hatton, he would have faced mayweather, that was the "talk" before the hatton fight, and I think floyd beats him easily....

I agree Kostya is overrated by somepeople. Although a lot of fans rate him about right and aknowledge that he had a big right hand, good chin, speed and improved boxing skills after the Philips fight, I would rank him as a top 5 JW but no way even close to number 1 like some nuthuggers do. He is definitely deserving of HOF status but not as true all time great. Oscar would have put a whuppig on him had their fight ever come off, so would a prime Mosley if he would have stopped at JW. Although Ricky Hatton just caught him on the dowside and the right time.

In the Judah fight, Zab was doing really well in the first few moments and then got caught. He didn't think he was hurt and sprung up before he regained his equilibrium. Had he stayed down for a couple seconds, it would have been a completely different fight.

Alfredo Angulo kinda reminds me of kostya, same time of solid fighter. I don't think he was overrated, he was a very tough man to beat.

We all know Chavez was gone by the time of their fight, but still he had the name, and the way he won. People have a way of overrating these kinds of victories.

Im a big Angulo fan but hes not close to Tszyu as far as skill level. Angulo is more like a young Yori Boy.

ID favor a prime Tszyu over Bradley but still a good competetive matchup, and certainly not a longshot. Maybe 2 to 1 favorite.

He was good, but I definately agree with you. He hitted very hard, but his resume doesnt impress me, and I dont think he is that skilled.

As far as the Casual fan goes your probably right. I would like to think that knowledgeable fans know better. IMO this is like giving Larry Holmes,Rocky Marciano full credit for beating Ali and Holmes.

kostya is a bit overrated in that people were proclaiming him the best 140 pounder besides aaron pryor. but what he did do was significant. he s had the longest 140 pound reign in the past 20 years. he was an olympic silver medalist. he beat vernon forest in the amateurs. he knocked out prime shamba and zab- they were considered great at the time he fought them- now everyone shits on them- but at the time- they were good fighters. he didnt get to avenge against philips cos philips lost before kostya got to him. but i think he woudlve lost anyway. he was similar to margarito in that he was like a freight train, if you allowed him to move forward, back u up and gain momentum he was impossible to stop with his hammer right hand. but if you met him in , and stopped him from rolling as hatton and vince did , he could be stopped.

all in all- he s still a great career. i dont think he s overrated in the sense that nobody is calling him the greatest or anything. i think his legacy is still ahead of ricky as he was undisputed and lineal longer. of course nobody is calling him a pac or floyd, as he never weight hopped- but there is something to be said about the consistency required to reign in one weight class for a long time. its not easy otherwise we d see alot more of it. fighters as weve seen - win a belt and maybe get 4 defences max before another young lion comes along. pavlik, taylor, abraham, etc. we ve seen it so many times. but kt reigned for ages.

    hall of famer? certainly.
his legacy lies above the likes of gatti, hatton, judah, and many many more.

i think some people here are a bit critcal of anyone that isnt a pacquiao or floyd. theres nothing wrong with losing. the guy was a champion at 140 for a long time. thats a hard thing to achieve and even harder to maintain. credit where credit is due people.
