Here some of his welterweght title fight with Docusen, there more out there as well, i have some in fact :good [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qORkfNNnYA[/ame]
Burt you are pure class :good - this guy is clearly off the planet - I think that statement about Robby fighting 'no-names' has just won it for me as probably the stupidest thing I've ever heard - top marks - I'm with you on Robby - i think in the St Valentines Day Massacre vs Lamotta I don't think I've seen anyone display every single quality to such a high degree as that p4p - i mean the athleticism, the speed, the power, the chin, the stamina, the grace, the timing, the accuracy, the youth, the experience, the combinations, the jab, the right hand, the uppercuts, the hooks, the body beating aswell - if someone asked me to grade him out-of-10 on all of these for that fight I'd probably be giving him 10-out-of-10 on everything - and i can't really think of anyone who i thought was just that perfect in every area all rolled in one - credit to LaMotta aswell - he was the sort of guy to force Rob to produce everything he had i suppose
Yes he would be. Wouldn´t be my pick either but there is one respected poster - don´t remember the name - on here who has him number one.
two things become evident during that footage: 1)i was way off the mark when i claimed that robinson's footwork wasn't on par with his other skills in the "top 10 all time" thread i made 2)the combination at 6:46 ends this thread
great post:good but in regards to the first part, i think the poster meant that roy jones fought nobodies. i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, there's no way he meant robinson, right:think
If you mean who in my lifetime that I have seen fight live/tv I would probably say Ali or Duran. If you mean who have I seen footage of that I would give that ranking to SRR would be my answer.
Robinson footwork is some of the best i've ever seen, the thing that makes it special to me is the way he is always so balanced and can get his leverage behind his shots at almost any moment, whether retreating or going forward. I'm not sure anyone was better at that than him
Yes Rocky I get upset when ill informed posters denigrate, some immortal like Ray Robinson. I boil...To answer your post about St, Valentine Massacre of Lamotta...Two points. 1 Jake lamotta was forced to lose about 10 pounds, before the fight to make the 160 lb limit...It weakened Jake a lot.He was winning the bout for about 7-8 rds, and the weight loss just drained him, after that... 2Having said that. Nature never made a more perfect fighter that night than Ray Robinson...What vicious combos he threw round after round will never be duplicated...He was the perfect fighting machine that night at the age of thirty... I am proud as a youngster I shook Ray Robinson;s hand before he turned pro at a golden gloves card ...Then I saw him 4 times in his prime, and in 1966, when he was retired I met him and again shook his hands at the Concord Hotel, in NY...My sole claim to fame ,methinks...b.b.
another great story burt:good not nearly as entertaining as yours but i remember the first time i saw that fight. my dad and i were arguing about who was better ali or robinson and he sat me down and made me watch the graziano, maxim and lamotta fights. it was a compelling argument and those last 3 rounds were tremendous. having said that, I still prefer ali/williams for my favourite offensive performance ever:tong
I never saw a more perfect fighter then Robinson BUT there never was a perfect fighter. Robinson in his prime fought a draw against Harry Brimm who was 23-9-2 at the time and ended with a record of 26-18-4 and was stopped 8 times. Robinson also fought Artie Levine and people say that he was given a long count in that bout. Robinson said that he hit him the hardest.
like i said out of 200 or so fights you named ten and out of those ten how manny of there fights did you follow
