    Heavyweight--Louis vs Johnson (or Jeffries)

    Lightheavy--Lewis vs Fitzsimmons

Middle--Steele (or several others) vs Ketchel

    Welter--Ross vs Walcott

    Light--Canzoneri vs Gans

    Feather--Armstrong vs McGovern

Bantam--Panama Al Brown vs Frankie Neil

    Fly--void-no flyweight division in 1900's

The 1900s has some absolutely astonishing depth. Tommy Ryan, Abe Attell, Sam Langford and Jeffries/JOhnson are arguably top 10 in their divisions and may not even get a run! Is this a Golden era to compete with the best of everyone? Actually i wonder if Mc Govern might have fought at Bantam, which would allow Attel to slot in at feather. This should be a good contest. Armstrong v McGovern looks particularly brutal.

    1900's
    Johnson[if Jeffries, Louis]
Fitz [if prime] [if the Fitz of Gardner fight, Lewis]
    Ketchel
    Walcott
    Gans
Can't really decide the feathers, McGovern?
    Brown

McVey, you are welcome to put in the strongest fighter you want, so therefore Johnson to take Louis. I think i agree with you on that particular match, i think Johnson is better bet against Joe Louis, than Jeffries is.

Fitz in the 1900s was probably not quite prime Fitz, but he was good enough to destroy Ruhlin and Sharkey in the 1900s. Am i reading your post correctly by suggesting you think that Fitz wins.

Louis vs Johnson - Louis would murder Johnson. I like Johnson but when he tries to clinch Louis would land some of his short punches and hurt him. Once he is hurt, it´s over.

Lewis vs Fitzsimmons - Lewis was mobile enough to outbox Fitz but would fall for one of Fitz´s traps and get KOed.

Zale vs Ketchel - both had great chins and were tremendous punchers, still I think it goes to the cards, since Zale is more refined ...

Ross vs Walcott - Ross was never stopped and as good as Walcott was, he could be outboxed.

Canzoneri vs Gans - tough one. Gans wasn´t called the old master for nothing. I still pick Canzi but only because hes one of my favs. 50/50 I think.

    Armstrong vs McGovern

Panama Al Brown vs Frankie Neil - not educated enough on either one.

A clean sweep to the 30s!

Middleweight is an interesting weight. Gpater, what do you think of the idea of substituting Sam Langford in for Ketchel. Personally, i have always been a little more cautious than most in rating Ketchell so highly. Theoretically, i think that Langford should be a beast at middleweight, but i am not so sure his middleweight results are quite as impressive as his higher weight results. Still, your picks have thrown a cat amongst the pidgeons. I had thought this one was a forgone conclusion.

I honestly dont know enough about Langford to make a judgement. I will be back to explain my picks later, I have to do stuff right now.

    1. Louis over Johnson (or Jeffries)---Johnson's weak jaw troubles me. Jeff, I think, is made to order for Louis. It is just a matter of how much he could take, sort of like Baer.

    2. Langford over Lewis (I will change my own pick--I should have been a political hack)

    3. Yarosz over Ketchel (I went with Steele as the consensus pick-not mine. I am just not as big as some on Ketchel.)

    4. Ross over Walcott (more consistent, and great chin)

    5. Gans over Canzoneri (I have always been impressed with Gans on film more than any of his contemporaries)

    6. Armstrong over McGovern

    7. Brown over Neil (Brown just seems to have been the better fighter off the records)

How weak do you think Johnson's jaw was?
He was stopped 7 times, 4 times after the age of 48,once when 37,once by Choynsky and once by Klondike when he was 21.

Good point, but he seems to have been knocked down and hurt quite often, by Griffin for example. I still like Louis, although Johnson has I think a much better shot at Louis than Jeffries does because of styles, if nothing else. Jeffries seems made for Louis.

Zale lost an awful lot in the 1930s. I can't see zale ever being able to survive a ******* with Ketchel. He better box, or he gets knocked out. I think there were better middles of the 1930s than Zale, Freddie Steel in particular.

Why not? Your all about resumes arn't you? The man cleaned out his era at middleweight defeating great fighters in the process(Twin Sullivan, Billy Papke), knocked out a great lightheavyweight(OBrien), fought the bigger prime sam langford 6 close rounds, and even floored a prime jack johnson. Ketchel feared no one and proved himself beyond doubt one of the hardest hitters who ever lived. Ketchel accomplished more by his 24th birthday than most did in their entire careers!

Louis, tough fight for him though.
More comfortable with a '91 version, but Fitzsimmons
    Ketchel
Ross, wait Walcott, no Ross, wait.
    Toss-up, Gans
    Another tough one, Armstrong
    Brown
