The best combination of technique/speed/power the division has ever seen. Floyd was truly remarkable. Just unbelievable. Such a shame he wasted these talents on a 2nd rater like brian london instead of Machen, Folley, or Valdes in 58. only a handful under 200lb in history can cope with a late 1950s Floyd. Many above 200lb would succumb to floyd. Outside of Wlad, floyd would rule the heavyweight division today. Especially with modern enhancements.
Thanks SuzieQ49. believe it or not, I've ALWAYS wanted to see this fight..I'm a huge fan of Floyd Patterson.
Floyd looks sooooo good on film. My God is his technique and combinations perfect. Just perfect. Between liston, Moore, pastrano, Johnson, Floyd, Machen, Folley there were some outstanding great ring technicians in the late 1950s heavyweight division. All of them box so gracefully.
Absolutely...that's exactly what I mean..he had the qualities of a champion which involved how you carried yourself OUTSIDE the ring as well..in that regard Floyd is on par with Joe Louis and very few other great champions.
The 50's were definitely a great decade for quality heavyweight technicians..and I include lightheavyweights Harold Johnson and Willie Pastrano amongst that group as they too had flirtations with the heavyweight division.
Absolutely... from 1950-1960 you had the following technicians Sonny Liston, Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, Archie Moore, Harold Johnson, Joe Louis, Zora Folley, Eddie Machen, Floyd Patterson, Willie Pastrano, Roland Lastarza, Bob Baker. I don't think there has been a decade in the heavyweight division with better ring technicians.
Patterson was always such a class act in the postfight interviews...he generally praised an opponent and was never an arrogant ***** like so many guys since his time.
I´m a big fan of his, my fav hw aside of Schmeling. I think he made up for his avoiding during his title r eign with his latter efforts. P4p one of the best hws, up there with Marciano and Dempsey IMO. Such a great fighter and nice person.
Galaxy has a much better haircut. When Patterson sells the jab and hooks he looks like a lightweight.
