oh steve will allow damage, its knowing when the fighter has had enough and being vocal about what he wants is what sets him apart. but yes :good you are right my friend, he is the best active ref, hands down. he needs to be in more big title fights.
He is by far my favorite ref!! In my house we call him no neck. I remember when watching Taylor vs. Pavlik I after Pavlik had knocked down and rocked silly. Had it been any other ref, the fight probably would have been stopped. Think about THAT one for a minute
Oh, so sensitive. Are you sure you didn't see a little glimmer of existential self-doubt and cracked dry lips on Paulie. Perhaps a little dry life-less hair that could use some Pantene conditioner? .......... ****, the sort of stuff boxing fans want a fight stopped for these days..... "the poor little cuddly one looked a titsy witsy lost and confused".... Some people here should watch golf, rather than boxing! :bart
after round 9 pualie was just there to take damage, kahn completely destroyed paulies confidence and when you completely destory your opponent mentally (especially when he lacks the power to even slow you down a bit)there is really no point to continue. unless of course you are a sick scum bag who enjoys seeing a guy getting his brains battered into mush for 3 rounds and him not being able to do a single thing to stop it (paulie wasnt going to get koed, he would have finished the fight if it were up to him)
Blah blah blah. Though posturing. GTFO, it's a sport not a tough men contest. Go watch Kimbo Slice popping eyeballs out in the backyard on youtube.
And yet look at the Khan fight! I understood the Cotto stoppage for example: he didn't want to fight and was backpedalling for a couple of rounds and it was a good stoppage. GBP needed the TKO in this fight to hype Khan and Smoger delivered. Thumbs down for Smoger.
Its not the refs job to decide if its too much punishment for a fighter who has no power, that is the corner's job. There was no reason for the ref to stop the fight when he did. Like I said that was a very un-Smoger like stoppage.
no, it wasn't. smoger called time and had paulie looked over. told him what he wanted. told he he'd give him another round. saw more of the same and ended it. it is the sign of a man who knows the fight game and knows the fight he's responsible for. it was a good stoppage.
a good ref is supposed to take in all the variables in ensuring a fighters safety, if he sees a guy as discouraged as paulie was and also sees that paulie could barley land any thing of impact let alone hurtful on kahn then in my book thats a time to do your job and protect the fighter (which is 90% of a refs job)
Agreed. Why would that fight continue? Malignaggi had barely thrown anything in the 10th. He was told he had to do something. He tried and well, basically, it had no effect. Khan was going for the stoppage in my opinion. Why let Malignaggi take the extra punishment just for the sake of doing so? Malignaggi is a warrior and would not quit, but i think even he was ok with the stoppage.
