Thoughts on the Undercard fighters last night: DeGale, Chisora, Gavin, Burns.....

Was very impressed with DeGale. Horton was a good step up. He is clearly in good condition and has some great natural attributes. Very fast and quick reflexes and its good to hear he is working very hard in the gym. He still makes allot of mistakes. Do tend to worry that he is not fighting the right kind if style to suit him but I guess we won't see the best of DeGale until fights someone that comes at him. He is very arrogant but confidence is a good thing in a fighter. Was happy to hear he has been sparring Cleverly. If i was Warren I would try and set up sparring with Pascal, Ward or Green during the summer. Would like his next fight to be for the English title and an eliminator for the British. Paul David or Steve McGuire would be decent.

Chisora did what was expected but he looked decent. We will see what he is really made off in a re-match with Sexton, or fights with other domestic challengers. Heavyweight is decent domestically at the moment. If its not Sexton then a defence agaisnt the winner of Fury vs McDermott.

Gavin looked fantastic. really excited about him. He is in a very good division domestically. Not sure about his conditioning thogh. He looks big and strong but soft around the waist. He 100% needs to stay at Light Welterweight. The fast he is talking about moving to Welterweight worries me. He has everything to go to the top but he needs to put the graft in and you have to wonder whats happening if he is talking about Welterweight already. Think he is ready for Lenny Daws next. If not get him in with a former British champion like Morrison or Barnes.

I saw the whole of the Burns fight. He looked very very strong and solid. Really well conditioned. Clearly he has matured into a strong Super Featherweight. two losses but those tough fights and will be a great experience going onto his next fight with Martinez for the world title. Last night he was clearly rusty and not very accurate but was just a warm up after being out for a long time. I was favouring Martinez previously but i think Burns will over power Martinez now and win the belt in Scotland.

Billy Joe Saunders needs to get down to at least Light Middleweight. He will not get to domestic level if he fights above 154lbs.

Liam Walsh look fantastic. Great addition to the super featherweight division. I would get him in for the vacant Commonwealth title or against Skykes and would bet a fortune on him winning. He is far better than any fighter other than Burns at Super Featherweight currently.

 

Pretty much agree with everything written above.

DeGale certainly has star quality in his personality. In a similar way to Naz, you're either going to love the guy, or hate him.... but you will watch him! Would like to see him fulfil his potential, he's a character and boxing needs them.

 

I wasn't impressed with DeGale, he's so ****ing amateurish, he looks like he's still in his first year of boxing. He slaps and throws cuff shots all the time, his movement is shocking, and his speed comes from the fact he doesn't throw properly.

 

still think he is a bit of a *****. reminds me of a lary kid at a tube station you cant beat the crap out of because he is only 15 or an unhelpful shelf stacker at sainsburys that talks in slang.

 

chisora has the tools to do well...but, my worry is his heart, not just in fights but in training...from what i know he has a very lazy personality......if he doesnt train hard for a fight, then finds himself needing to dig deep in a fight, i would worry that he's got that determination in him...
anyone remember the footage where he was training in wales with enzo calzaghes boys, he didnt want to run much and just give up training half way through...
aside from this he does look very good so far....mind you i have been wrong many times before, when a boxer looks great as he's on his way up, only to be well exposed when he moves up a level or two...

 

Agree with all of that. And would like to add that Frankie Gavin's opponent was as bad as I thought he would be.

My choice for next opponents.
Frankie - Mihala Mutu would be perfect but otherwise Adil Anwar, Jason Cook, Barry Morrison, Juho Tolppola
James - Lolenga Mock, Kreshnik Qato, Matthew Thirwall, Joseph Kwadjo
BJ - I don't care just get the kid busy the inactivity is clearly hurting him. He is the sort of kid that needs 7/8 fights a year at the beginning of his career to keep focused, keep in shape and make the improvements needed to get to that next level.

 

I thought that Burns is the most improved fighter I can remember watching for a long long time... He is looking so stronger, nourished and hydrated at the weight, that makes so much difference at the Championship Level...:good

I think he will stop Martinez when they get it on... I have no doubt his accuracy is there, with it been a bit off last night it ain't a bad thing, he can really take that to another level with the focus in the gym...:good

I thought that Chunky did what he had to do and we won't see the best of him until he has someone stood in front of him that will make him think for every second of every round...:yep

I thought Del Boy did what he had to do... I would love to see him beat Fury...:good

I was disapointed that Tony Bellew did not fight last night, but I think that he is going to have to take the alternative route as nobody domestically will go near him...:yep

I enjoyed the show last night, had a good seat, got plenty of signatures on my programme and met some of the ESB fighters who post... All great lads who had the craic with all the punters...:yep

The only downside was seeing the football hooligans jumping on the back of a boxing match to have a fight, that's just ****...:nono

 

You have to wonder why Burns was thrown in with Arthur and earl in the 1st place.

i remember he looked like a skinny kid with loads of tatoos agaisnt CJ. now he looks so strong.

 

Burns did what was expected of him against a journeyman who has caused natural lightweights a lot if problems (John Murray for instance)

DeGale needs to sort his punching technique out; throws too many looping punches and his jab is non-existent. Get him in with Renda or Samuels next, they will make him think more due to their dangerousness.

Missed Gavin. Heard he was in poor condition, word on Tait beforehand was that he was right up for it, his mates had put a tonne each on him to pull off the upset. Didn't happen of course, but Gavin has the tools to go all the way AT 140!!! Hope he doesn't move up, looks suited to ten stone IMO.

 

Oh, and Del Boy was efficient; did what he had to do and has the best theme tune ever and I'm not much of an Only Fools fan, but that is a TUNE and gets everyone hyped.

I wish Del the best if luck; he may be a mentalist, but if he loses another stone and a half and, most importantly, providing his punch resistance holds up, he could do alright for himself. I'm a fan of the nutjob, but not gonna blow this win out if proportion. A rematch with Sexton or a scrap with Big Aud' will show us what Chisora is really made of IMO.

 

I would put Walsh in with Burns.

 

I think he's a dick too, he annoys me to hell. However, he's got potential and if he does make it half big, his personality will make him a draw.

 

I think for development the CJ fight was excellent...it has made so much difference... Ricky has shown the real benefits of learning from a defeat... :yep

Having a zero ain't always the best thing in the world...:yep

 

Burns has been matched well IMO. Hardly a Maskaev-style botch job; also, he is clearly improving.

 

thought Frankie was brilliant, he will never have one of them super looking bodies but the kid does train hard!! Very hard, You couldn't not train hard and be under Farnell!! The guy takes no prisoners... I think Frankie is growing all the time and also maturing.. Im not saying he can't make 10st but it will be tough.. I think we'll see him crowned at 10st then maybe move up??:good
