Of all things Amir Khan showed on Saturday night, one thing stands out even more than that superp jab: Paulie Malignaggi, a fast, skilled, smart and usually accurate (feather-fisted) counter-puncher was able to land just ONE punch on Khan's chin area according to HBO punch zone stats. Paulie's success came from shots landing to the side of Khan's head and some to the body (a pretty low 24% overall), but with that single shot to the chin, Khan did a near flawless job protecting that troubled area.

That is excellent news for Amir's future, as even a big bomb landing on other parts of the head might not result in a knockdown or KO, especially if he'll learn how to roll with them. What matters is to protect the chin, and even if Paulie can't punch ****, he still could've landed a few dozens of his feathers to that area, but he couldn't, Khan was very alert for all 11 rounds and 531 punches thrown by Malignaggi.

    Pretty impressive.

I think you overrate Malignaggi........he sure as hell was'nt accurate vs Hatton, who btw is not an exellent boxer but managed to do a number on Malignaggi anyways.

I think what Malignaggi has managed to show me in his last several fights is that he does well against a Diaz type who lowers his head and wants to close distance.

If you keep coming straight at Malignaggi with the same look, he can look good fighting the Diaz type who only knows one way.

.....but give him different looks and he's really not someone with the ability to adjust or who even has great timing.

......and btw, punchstat stinks. I dont know why people quote it or rely on it.
Malignaggi landed more than one straight shot at Khan's face, and Khan surely landed more shots than what punchstat showed.

Actually there was a point where Khan was a bit disturbed from one of Paulie's punches.

Khan was incredibly aggressive at one point and then eats a right hand and all of a sudden Khan stopped pushing forward and actually took a few steps back.

He fights a bit scared IMO. But in due time I expect him to beat a top tier guy and be overrated within seconds.

He did well against a guy with little power. Will he hold up against another Prescott type fighter? One with more skill? Not trying to hate or take away from what he did, but he didn't have much to actually fear in Paulie. He has the skill but...... :think

Malignaggi should spend more time in the gym and less time talking.

I think(THINK) that Paulie broke his right hand. in the 3rd/4th rounds, Paulie was counter punching much better than in the first 2 rounds (though he still lost those 2 rounds), then all of a sudden he stopped using his right hand, he wouldn't even block with it.

Um... what? He is overrated because he was dominated by the long-time and reigning Lineal LWW Champion, a two-division champ & P4P-er who beat Tszyu, Castillo, Collazo, and Urango? Jesus Christ boxing fans have a short memory.

This was impressive on khan's part....

Malignaggi though has never been a guy that was a chin checker or aimed for the chin.....he cut diaz eyes up, in almost all the fights I have seen of paulies he seems to go to the eyes, and in his best performance n'dou 1....he punched n'dou in the nose a lot, but never really the chin...

    but this stat is impressive...

Those HBO punchstats/Compubox stats are ****. I'm willing to bet Malignaggi landed a lot more than that.. not much more, but relying on Compubox is like relying on Jim Lampley to tell you whether a 4 punch combination landed or not. They're equally as blind.
