Boxing is a combat sport, they get paid to punish each other, they should fight till they drop, these days you see one slap and the ref just stops it.
Like Paulie/Khan. People have been trying to say it was a brutal massacre but the only punches Paulie was getting hit with routinely were jabs. The Cotto fight was more damaging.
I think they understand the risks of boxing much better now than they did back in the day. No one wants to see a fighter lose his senses later on in life. Just look at Ali and you will understand what fighting to long and taking unnecessary punishment can do to you. These young boxers have families to go back to. The refs are their to protect both fighters.
It wasn't a massacre but it was one guy doing damage and the other guy taking it without being able to give it back. Paulie's face wasn't looking too good. I didn't think stopping it was a bad idea. I thought it was pretty useless abuse by that point.
This. They should fight eachother until one is dropped? :-( That's how people get killed. Watch Griffin Vs Paret 3 and you'll see.
A boxing fight can only be stopped by the ref. But the ref should only stop a fight based on his own judgement if it seems 100% certain to him that a KO is imminent and that the fighter that he is to save has no chances whatsoever to defend himself any longer. If the fight is to be stopped because of injuries or cuts, this should only happen on the advice of the doctor. The ref shouldn't decide it by himself. The ref can always call for a time-out and ask the doctor to have a look at a fighter. The doc can then advise the ref to stop the fight, an advice the ref should always follow. If a fighter is taking too much punishment and is getting beat up (but not being on the verge of a KO), without hope to turn things around, his corner can always ask for the fight to be stopped (throw in the towel). The ref should then stop the fight, but again, he shouldn't do it out of his own assessment. The fighter himself can always quit and ask for the fight to be stopped.
It wasn't said but letting Paulie out for the 11th was a gift to him from the Doc and Referee. Letting him finish on his feet and not 'quit' or get stopped on his stool. He showed heart just throwing the pattering 'punches' if you can call them that even until the end, but you could tell he wanted out.
Of course paulie could have kept fighting, one of the main reasons i have a high respect for him. Who wants to fight on with a broken jaw whilst taking a heavy beating? paulie mallignagi. he wanted to fight on against hatton and i know he could have. however i think against khan he did content with it being stopped. their is no way he could have won as unfortunatly with the guys hand problems hasnt got the heaviest punches, and although he would have proudly continued to fight ( was still throwing punches even when the ref steeped in.) i think the ref done the right thing. now paulie could continue and earn more money with a few more fights which i believe is the main reason he remains fighting. all credit to him, i'm from scotland in the uk and wanted hatton to beat him and also khan as i am big fans of both. however i doubt their is many fighters who could boast the toughness, heart and chin of paulie. With good boxing skills to boot i'd have love to have seen a paulie mallignagi that didnt have hand problems throughout his career. or a paulie that maybe had a bit more natural power. that i believe would have been an outstanding fighter
no no, read my post, the doc and the corner can only advise the ref to stop the fight, which the ref should do then. But he doesn't have to do it, there have been occasions where the ref simply ignored the towel being thrown into the ring. This is irresponsible in my opinion, and as a golden rule the referee always follows the advice of the doc / corner and stops the fight. That's the general rule with most boxing commissions, there might be exceptions. 'only the referee can stop the fight'
