In a cruiserweight bout over the weekend, Wlodarczyk stopped Giacobbe Fragomeni. After Wlodarczyk bludgeoned Fragomeni against the ropes it appeared that Fragomeni could continue but didn't want to (although it honestly probably only was a matter of time)

This got me thinking though. Under WBC rules this bout was subject to open scoring and Fragomeni knew he was down on the cards in a big way since he had suffered 2 KDs. He doesn't have to power to take matters into his own hands and was likely to fade late in the fight. It doesn't seem impossible to me that he could have quit knowing he couldn't win(though this would be out of character for him.

What do you guys think? Can open scoring lead fighters to quitting?

probably so yes cause if your hearing you've got no chance on the scorecards and u know u aint knocking the other guy out then u would get disheartened.
fighters do fight on even tho they know there losing but hearing it being called out might have more of an effect.

i believe that's why sam peteres quit in the eighth round against vitaly K because he heard the scores. the scores were announced in the 4th and 8th round.

The effect of open scoring on the fighters is debateable, but I personally do not like it.

Fighters have no business quitting just because they are down. If you're down 5-0 in a hockey game after 2 periods, you don't skate off the ice. If you're down 3 touchdowns with 3 minutes to go in a football game, you don't walk off the field.

I don't like open scoring but its not an excuse for fighters to quit.

I'm not disagreeing that it's not an excuse, I'm asking if you think it has an effect.

    Only Quitters Quit

Although if the point is to say they may ease up in order to save some boxing life for their next fight....yeah, I could see that.

True, but I think Boxing needs to review who they pick as refs. It's a disgrace.

I know it is subjective but some scores make you shake your head.

    I agree, Caelum.

The problem we have is that even when we have guys like Gale Van Hoy consistently turning in horrendous scorecards...literally nothing is done about it.

Agreed, something needs to be done where the judges have to have accountability and EXPLAIN why they scored a fight, like taking notes during the fight.

It was just odd to see a tough guy like Fragomeni literally tell the ref to stop the fight after suffering the second KD. Open scoring just seemed to be the only reason why I thought he would have quit.
