I don't have a list. At a guess I'd say anywhere between 80-50. Not sure. Certainly I think top 30 is pretty outrageous.
No, I just don't particularly rate his skills and don't particularly rate many of his wins (e.g. Benvenuti).
Monzon. Best post war mw I've seen (my pre war knowledge is pretty limited) although Hagler runs him damn close obviously.
Where do you rate him as a middleweight, and how do you see him matching up against the other great 160 pounders; Hagler, Hopkins, Robinson, Greb, Tiger, Ketchel etc, etc?
The fact he was the best Middleweight in the world and had pretty much beaten all the contenders at that time except an unknown Argentine.
Yawn. He beat all the contenders of his time. What´s there more to do. Then came Monzon. I mean wtf are people asking for. He took the title from a borderline great mw, defended it against a ww, mw and p4p atg, some serious contenders, at least one of them among the uncrownded mw greats, the reigning ww champ who happened also to be a ww and p4p great and the heir to the crown, who is a borgerline great too. He gave rematches, set a record for title defences. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT?
Well, again, I don't have a list. I think Hopkins and Robinson would beat him soundly. He has a massive stylistic edge over Hagler, but I think Hagler has the decisively superior skillset which would ultimately win out. Tiger would be a close fight. Tiger is quicker and more versatile, but Monzon is very good at preventing a guy working inside and I'd probably give him the edge, having to shake off some uncomfortable spells on the way. There's not enough film of Ketchel or Greb to make a decisive call, but I think it's safe to say that Monzon would at least have a difficult night out with either, though (again) he has the stylistic edge. Overall I'd rate him about the same as or slightly below Hopkins as an ATG MW. He has the better record but then was less dominant and is quite simply not as good a fighter overall, IMO. I'd maybe have him between 4-6 at a guess.
:huh No-one's complaining that he should have been doing something differently. It's just a case of putting his achievements in perspective, like one would do with anyone. I just don't think Benvenuti looks like that good a fighter. A tasty amateur though.
Benvenuti is a Top5 at lmw, perhaps competing for the Top3, and at least a Top20 mw, perhaps Top15, who fought and beat the best mws of his day. Sorry but to me it sounds you are just let your hate for Monzon getting the better of you.
Less dominant? He didn't lose for 13 years and avenged all those losses, he take the title from a very good champion in Benvenuti, I believe he had 13 wins over top 10 ranked guys aswell, not to mention he never lost that title in the ring.
