Compared to what I described just straight forward running is close to useless. Yes it burns some calories, but many things do that, and that's hardly a feature worth describing. Burning calories, metabolising and losing weight are one and the same thing by the way.

No, they're actually not. First off, the metabolis works on a clock, it moves faster in the mornings and slower at night, obviously. Also, few things burn calories as well as running. You haven't done your research. Fact is, most boxing workouts don't burn too many calories. Hitting the speed bag, heavybag, throwing the medicine ball, hitting the pads. None of them burn many calories. Running burns about 125 calories per mile on average. That is far, far more than any of the afformentioned. SO, if you have to drop weight, running is the best option. Why do you think Chris Arreoloa is a fat ass. He admited on HBO that he never does road work.

    You described three advantages:

    1) Getting metabolism going. It does this by expending energy.
    2) Burning calories. Again, expending energy.
    3) Losing weight. By burning calories. You know, expending energy.

Metabolism gets itself going just fine, that in itself is not a goal. Burning calories in itself isn't very important either, a workout serves more goals. For a boxer that would rarely be weight loss unless he bloats between fights. I am quite certain that I burn more calories doing high paced high power bag work than during a simple jog btw. Moving and punching burns more calories than just moving, unless you think that energy just appears out of nowhere. But even if it's less, who cares. Burning calories isn't a goal in itself, I'd like to burn them on something useful.

I have nothing against running, I like it even. But "getting metabolism going" or pretending nothing burns calories like a simple jog, please. I also prefer my running to be road work, like I said earlier. And again because you did not seem to get this, compared to real road work, simply running is close to useless. Close to useless, read carefully. Not completely useless but close to. Sure it burns calories but many things burn calories. Like you said jump rope burns more calories, and it has more cross over benefits than running.

Arreola is a fat ass because he overeats and is lazy in the gym.

You really love Floyd. And from your comment you also seem new to boxing.

Boxers just have their own routines. Commonplace is early in the morning because you burn calories early in the day. But roadwork is roadwork whether it's at 10am or 3am.

First off, I mentioned metabolism once, you don't have to keep harping on that point as if you are an expert. You aren't. Second, you do not burn more calories hitting the bag than you do running, not jogging. Running burns 125 calories a mile, which takes about 6 minutes for a good runner. So, on a 5-mile run, a boxer can burn 625 calories. The point that you seem to be missing here is that running and road work are how boxer burn the majority of their calories. Every dedicated boxer in the history of the sport has run. In fact, I live in Bernardsville New Jersey where Mike Tyson used to run in the hill at 3 am each morning. He ran about 5-7 miles on average.

Again, there's a huge difference between running and jogging. Any fat ass can jog. All you're doing is bouncing. Running takes effort and it burns more calories than anything you have mentioned with the exception of skipping rope. As for road work, how much different is that from running, really? Throwing a few arm punches instead of keeping the arms punching. It's not. Sorry.

Burning calories in itself is NOT a goal in training. My point was that road work, which has more benefits apart from burning calories, is better than running. That just plodding forward is next to useless compared to doing it in a sports specific way. You responded that running burns calories. Yes it does, well great. If burning calories is one of your training goals, then by all means plod forward.

I never said road work isn't necessary.

And running is NOT how boxers burn most of their calories, that is the biggest nonsense I've ever heard. They'd have to run many more miles for that to be the case. Wasting the majority of your energy plodding along the streets would be a total waste and a very bad idea in a training camp.

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree. In my opinion, buring calories and making weight is part of boxing. And running is how most fighter (with the exception of fat asses like Toney and Arreola) stay in shape. I'm sure you know this. The average boxer probably runs at least 3-5 miles a day. I know for a fact that both Klitschkos run that much. That's a pair of heavyweights who don't need to make weight. I can only imagine how much fighters like Pacquaio run each day.

Running is the single biggest calorie-burning activity that most boxers participate in. How's that? Unless you can name me another exercise where they burn 625 calories. That's the equivalent of 35 minutes of skipping rope. Sparring? Not even close. You can actually visit a number of health and nutrition sites where you will quickly find that running burns more calories than any other single exercise, with the exception of skipping rope. Listen, it's been a nice talk. But I've got to run. :D

Swimming has to be up there? :huh

edit: I stand corrected, according to this - http://www.internetfitness.com/calculators/calburncalc.htm

That has to just be for a light swim, though. Barely more than carrying golf clubs, and way less than running 5mph? Come on...
