Let us envisage that when James Douglas faced Tony Tucker for the vacant IBF title in 1987, that instead of quiting while ahead, Douglas went on to win the fight.
This would leave us with the intriguing scenario of Douglas going on to face Tyson in Tokyo in 1987, rather than 1990 when they actually met.

In contrast to how he turned up poorly prepared to face Buster in 1990, this focused and hungry Tyson had superior head movement, combination punching and footwork.
He was supremely conditioned for the full 12 rounds and had an excellent corner, rather than an incompetent circus.

Now please imagine that Douglas arrives in the same physical condition he was in the 1990 upset. He also has the heart of a lion from then too; perhaps his mum passes away earlier or some other event inspires him? Clearly a Douglas bringing his 'A game' would always have given Tyson problems, his solid outfighting skills incorporating a long, powerful, accurate and timed jab, his combination punching ability and quality of lateral movement are useful assets for this match-up.

What would have happened in your opinion?

    Not much difference.

    Same result.

Douglas did not let Tyson look good. There are two men in the ring.

Douglas fought lazy in parts so he might improve a little.

Douglas version of Tyson is just as bad as the version of Douglas that showed up against Holyfield...except Tyson had a little more self-respect to crash-diet for the fight to give the impression he was in somewhat good shape. Douglas wasn't the only one to kick Tyson's ass during that time; his sparring partners were said to be doing the same...and not just talking about Greg Paige knocking him down. Before he even left for Japan...terrible shape.

You have to train. You have to prepare both mentally and physically for a fight. If you don't, well, you can get your ass kicked.

Tyson made it easier for Douglas because there was little resistance after about round 2.

It's interesting what McCall says though:

In 1987, I like the way Tyson fought Tyrell Biggs. That's the kind preperation he would have needed.

Douglas may have still made Tyson look bad for a short while, but Mike would have won the fight...in my opinion.

Tyson KO 6 Douglas. Even in 1990, Douglas was given a long count and was lucky to survive an 8th round knockout.

Tyson all the way. You got to give Douglas credit for the brilliant fight he had against Tyson, but the bottom line was Tyson did not train and didn't take the fight seriously.

Ferdie Pacheco said it best after Douglas was taken apart in no tie by Holyfield. "This fight shows that Douglas isn't a great fighter he just got a hold of a bad Tyson."

The thing about it is Tyson and Douglas were suppose to fight again but Douglas wanted no part of it. He talked a lot of trash after he knocked Mike saying it was easy, but he obviously was scared to fight Mike again.

Don King and Donald Trump sued Buster because he and his team had an agreement to fight Mike again but didn't go along with the agreement. Not only that but Buster tried to sue Don King to get out of his contract so he wouldn't have to fight Mike again. This pretty much says it all.

When Holyfield knocked out Douglas it showed everyone that he was out of shape. When Douglas stepped onto the scales it never looked good for him, even before the first bell rang. He was clearly not the in same physical condition he was against Tyson.

He was over a stone heavier.

Holyfield also got a hold of a bad Douglas.

I would actually say that Douglas was in worse physical condition for the Holyfield fight than Tyson was for his fight against Douglas.

Certainly when it comes to scales.......Tyson was actually heavier against Berbick when he won the title in one of his career best performances than he was against Douglas. Tyson was 220 1/2 for Douglas, which give or take a pound south, was around his natural fighting weight.

Douglas was well out of shape........well outta shape, for Holyfield.

If anyone ever fought a perfect fight it was Buster Douglas when he beat Mike Tyson. I also think that Tyson was not prepared for the fight.
Tyson in 1987 was a much better boxer than he was in 1990.
    Tyson in 9 rounds.

So people prefer to explain the fact that Tyson was in shape and lost by the fact that he starved himself to fool us all into thinking he was training when in fact he wasn't? Is there any evidence for this claim, or are we just scraping the bottom of the barrell for any excuse possible?
