What exactly is a 'Corckscrew punch'? How do you throw it specifically and in what situations are its best used for? What are it's advantages and disadvantages? I think I have a wrong defintion of one...
I think you mean a screw punch. Its like a jab/uppercut. Usually with the left hand vertical or palm up depends.
Watch any Prince Naseem fight or highlight Reel, its the uppercut he really twists, generating extra power.
its the corkscrew uppercut i thought, dont worry about it if your new to boxing you probably throw your uppercuts like this anyway as its less disguised and easier to throw like this, problem is your opponent will see it coming the week before it lands, uppercuts should be thrown starting from the chest and not wound up up in a circular motion by the hip (corkscrew)
ok thanks guys. i always thought it was a verticle/palm up fist jab after a slip/lean to the inside. cheers
They are used for straight punches to the face- corkscrew jab and corkscrew cross. They are used primarily to inflict a cut on your opponent's face or to exacerbate damage to a pre-existing cut. They are fired with proper jab or cross mechanics, but upon impact, the fist is twisted 180 degrees for added cutting potential. The final twist comes from the shoulder and not the elbow or wrist. Instead of having your palm facing downward at the moment of impact, you twist your fist until the thumb is facing the floor.
The bolo punch is a flashy uppercut used mainly for showboating. The rear hand is whipped in a backwards circle before snapping into your opponent's chin. Roy and Ray Leonard would use this punch every so often, and sometimes they would just start to circle the back hand but then throw a jab with the lead hand.
Hatton was good at it in his WBU days. It's good to throw when coming off the ropes and after slipping a punch at times.
Its an effect punch to use as along as you dont throw it with power and lead with it, at the same time, like Hamed used to, because it leaves you very exposed if you miss. Best way to throw it is to use to jar the opponents head out of his guard to set up the right hand, or!! when you fall short with the right hand instead of pulling out you can stay in there and throw an upjab then! another right hand, its especialy effective against guys that go back straight back in a line because you can just rinse and repeat the combo and they invariably wont be able to avoid it, see Ward vs Kessler.
