Folks, I just taped the pre-fight hype and the actual fight off of ESPN Classics a little while ago. It's all good stuff.. Classic footage... LOOK! In the past, some folks have stated that the fight may've been fixed for Primo Carnera to win due to his mob ties, etc..... However, after seeing the fight on tape, I must conclude that the fight was fought on a LEGIT basis up in Long Island, New York, back in June of '33..... Jack Sharkey and Primo Carnera looked in superb shape and ready to rumble by the opening bell. Neither dude held back in the ring. Both guys looked like they were there to win. Come the fateful round 6, Carnera looked in control. Sharkey did land a booming right to Carnera's jaw in the round, but Carnera ate it well.. Carnera landed a wicked uppercut to Sharkey's mouth / face after Sharkey backed against the ropes for a brief second.. Sharkey basically went down on his face as if he were shot by a .44 magnum...... Upon me reviewing the tape a few times, I think Primo Carnera scored a clean KO over Jack Sharkey to win the crown....... Any takers here? MR.BILL:bbbthumbsup
Your view seems to be the concensus nowadays...more so than it was in the past...I think it was legit...much to Sharkey's disgrace.
It was legit. Sharkey was not in his best shape while Carnera was at his technical and physical peak as well as the most focused he had ever been. The weigh-in picture is very telling: This content is protected An upset was in the makings.
It was legit. Sharkey had one of his not too infrequent off nights and Carnera fought the fight of his life. If Sharkey was acting he deserves an oscar.
I watched Sharkey-Carnera 2 many times and it has to be legit. Sharkey was looking to get Carnera out of there with some right hand power shots. If the fix was in, why is Sharkey landing powerfull right hands? Specifically, in the sixth round Sharkey landed a few good right hands in the exchanges. You can see Carnera is moving well and has a high punch count throughout the fight. Carnera is wearing down Sharkey as the fight progresses and Sharkey just seems to run out of gas from the pressure.
Sharkey, as well as others, couldn't compare to the muscle-bound Carnera in a photo session...... But that doesn't mean fighters were outta shape going into a fight with Primo Carnera. Jack Sharkey had bulging biceps. If anything, it was a lack of the "Six-Pack" in his middle-section that led many to believe he was not finely tuned for several fights....... I think Sharkey was tuned for Carnera....... Still, aside from all the hoopla, Carnera seemingly landed a bomb of an uppercut to Shark's face in round 6 to take the crown away back in '33.... MR.BILL:bbbhat
He wasn't in horrible shape or anything but I believe he had lost his edge. The rematch with Schmeling was a dreadful performance by his standards, even though he somehow managed to win the decision. Against Carnera, he was looking good in the early rounds but not as good as in their previous fight, although Carnera to his credit had improved a lot. Sharkey was never worth anything after the Carnera loss. Sharkey vs Walker: This content is protected
I agree. Carnera by '33 was not a bungling stiff of a fighter as many have claimed.. Carnera was 28 yrs old and peaked... I saw Carnera in a cameo performance from 1949 in some Hollywood film. Christ, Carnera was at or near age 44 and still buffed / ripped.... Freaky that Carnera became a drunkard late in life and died from a liver disease.......... He was so buffed / ripped in his peeak yrs..... Primo Carnera (1905-1968).... MR.BILL:deal
Sharkey was an underacheiver. Carnera was an overacheiver. Sharkey had off nights. Carnera met opponents who were simply better than him. That is how it worked out.
The reason why people have to read the media with a RELLY open mind. The press didnt like Carnera with his ties, so they wrote the Sharkey fix fight.
