Kalambay outboxes Valdez. Valdez was great but slow of feet. Kalambay has the skills and speed to outbox him. Wouldn´t rule out Valdez catching him though. Kalambay is a bit underrated these days.

I take Rocky, Kalambay is skilled but no Monzon.

Valdez ko10 Kalambay. You guys confuse the shot Valdez who lost twice to Corro with the one who was at his peak in '74 and who battled Monzon.

No we just watch his footwork and see how he looks like he's stuck in cement

Yeah, you're the expert...Valdez was a slow, plodding no talent...Kalambay was the greatest...and boxing began in 1980.

Valdez wasn't too quick to be fair. I think he's someone that Kalambay could potentially look good against.

It's not like McCallum was a poor fighter, but he wasn't the fastest either and was soundly outboxed by a prime Kalambay.

The master of smooth technical boxing beats the master of smooth close-mid range punching, but might have to ride out a few rocky moments and work hard for it.

Valdez skills are being underrated by some here imo, though i don't think he matches up well with pure boxers in general.Better in fights where he can be the general like Briscoe and Tonna or is the quicker man.

Valdez is being painfully underrated by you guys. A slow guy dosen't suddenly have the quick, catlike moves he displayed vs Bennie Briscoe in '73 and '74 and in bouts thereafter, and to be able to give the greatest of middleweight champions his hardest fights..a peak Valdez would have either decisioned or maybe even stopped Kalambay, a very good fighter who WAS NOT a great by any means.

What about the stylistic match though Cobra, kalambay was a monster on defense and an educated smooth backfoot fighter, exactly the kind of fighter Valdez toiled with even in his prime. Both these guys have very close accomplishments anyway, it's not like one did signifcantly more than the other.

Now that's a more plausible argument..and one I can possibly agree on..it would be a very close encounter actually, as I concede that Valdez had to travel the limit in one of his lesser efforts vs Rudy Robles (who was similar in style, tho' of course not as good as Kalambay) in a defense of his inerim "title" before meeting Monzon. It's just that cocksure guys whose whole concept of boxing dates from the 80's like PowerPuncher had relegated Valdez, like he dcoes with all other fighters he really dosnt know too much about as a plodding "stuck in cement" mediocrity..
Anyways, it's possible stylistically maybe, that Kalambay could have snuck a victory, but could just as plausibly have lost a rematch to Valdez..so I agree with you somewhat on that, and not that it was a given that Kalambay had Valdez's number because of Rocky being some 70's era "mediocrity".
