I agree with the Toney pick. When I joined this board I considered myself a total Toney die hard, I love the guy, and i've uploaded many of his fights to my youtube channel, the odd ones that nobody else has bothered with. I watch him loads, support him always. But when I first start posting here I was running him down because his posse so overated him. So, so overate him. It was really mad, because he was and still is one of my favourites. He's a very good fighter, but he used to get bummed up something ridiculous. It's not so bad these days. That's the board. As for more generally, Muhammd Ali.
Get the **** outta here. Hopkins is among the best of our generation. Hagler's big fights: Leonard, Hearns, Duran (goddamn lightweight). Would you say Hagler is overrated?
:nono erroneous. noob, you do realize how many fighters would be considered "overrated" if they fought the level of comp that taylor did?
bernard hopkins is not overrated. he is a superb boxer and tactician (as well as dirty as hell). what he did moving up two weight divisions to dominate the then champ is quite an accomplishment. however, the whole "underdog" thing was something he pushed just as hard as the networks. hopkins relished being the "underdog" and encouraged the label not only b/c it probably motivated him even more but also b/c of the attention/$$ it brought when he dominated. all the talk in the build up to the pavlik fight was kelly knocking bernard out and bernard wasnt all that forceful in response until right before the fight. but behind closed doors its been revealed that they knew they would wipe the floor w/ kelly and bernard even told nazim that "if i can't beat this kid then i really need to retire." the only thing better than dominating when everyone thinks you will is dominating when no one thinks you will. no one understood this better than bernard.
Retired: Joe Calzaghe by far by his supporters Current: The Kbros . . . absurd in how high their fans rank them p4p and as ATG status. A lot of people are saying fighters that where over hyped at one point and then they took a loss and then became a bum over night. Some of the more crazy claims I have heard on the thread: Larry Holmes . . . this guy is without question one of the best heavies of all time. Tyson . . . at his peak one of the best heavies ever. people sometimes remember the late tyson the Hawk . . . SRL, who fought all the greats did not want to fight him Duran . . . AHAHHAh SRL . . . AHAHAH Someone who is an ATG but is slightly overrated is JCC.
Toney is an ATG. Yeah, he lost some fights that he should never have lost, but then again he fought more often than nearly all the other top level fighters during the last 20 years. Well, Duran, Chavez and Jorge Castro had more.. Out of the still active pros, Toney is probably the one with most pro rounds (618rds, thanx boxrec), though it is debatable as to whether Toney is still 'active' at this point. He's not officially retired from boxing yet. Out of my head, only Emmanuel Augustus comes close to that, well maybe there are some journeymen who had that many fights too. It's an old-school record, and many of the old-school ATGs had some losses on their records that they shouldn't have had (Archie Moore is a good example here). Toney has fought a who is who from MW up to HW (except for the Klitschkos), never been stopped or close to been stopped. Toney has faced 12 former or reigning champs, and beaten 9 of them. 6 out of his opponents went on to win (another) major belt(s). Toney may have had his share of close wins, and also a couple where he didn't deserve to win (the Tiberi fight), but then again he also was on the losing side of other close decisions (both Griffin fights) and he got robbed himself (Peter I). One can argue that Toney isn't an ATG because of him getting caught with roids twice (but certainly not because his record). Then again I think Toney achieved ATG status before even moving up to the HW division for real in 2003. And to think that he still achieved such a great record even when he was such a lazy undisciplined fatass for most of his career.
