read fight reports, especially without replay available and you'll get all kind of opinions. I think the fight was legit, I wouldn't want to be hit by that uppercut, it twister his head sideways and quick, it's how people go to sleep.
Mr. Bill, Sharkey was disgustingly out of shape the 2nd time against carnera. His body turned into a marshmellow. All his muscle was gone. He looked like soft flab. That was not the ripped to shreds 1927 Sharkey vs Jack Dempsey in there.
Shark was never big on training, but he hardly looked like a slob against Carnera in '33.... By 1933, Shark was already past his best days at the tender age of 31..... MR.BILL:rasta
Exactly right! Most boxing fans in the United States didn't like Primo Carnera or Max Schmeling in the 1930's...for several reasons. The politics of their countries were two more of those reasons. This content is protected
Carnera had some gross looking fangs for teeth....... That smile of his was ugly...... BUT! I now kinda' like Ol' Primo....... MR.BILL:good
If it was legit or a dive, either way it's a disgusting loss for Sharkey as Primo was not championship caliber in any era.
For decades, the allegations that Johnson and Sharkey took dives against Willard and Carnera respectively survived due to the dearth of film availability on those bouts. With that footage now readily accessible to everybody, we no longer have to rely on mindlessly biased scribes parroting second hand opinions. Want to see what a real dive looks like, check out Lulu Perez-Willie Pep. Take a look at the difference between Carnera-Sharkey I & II. In their title rematch, Primo battered and bludgeoned Sharkey all over the ring from the opening bell. Jack was trapped on the ropes and trying to get away when Carnera pivoted into and drove upwards with an uppercut which Sharkey did not see coming. End of story.
Yeah...I know what you mean. For some reason, I always liked Primo. And he wasn't the stumble bum that many like to paint him as today. He wasn't a great; that's for sure. But, at his best, I can easily think of several Heavyweight Linear Champions that he would have beaten...in my opinion, of course.
From what I read,Sharkey had all kinds of talent, and shoulda-coulda been a great champion. But,was very emotional, you could get inside his head, and he would blow a fight. He lived to a ripe old age,and surely outlived any alleged mobsters he woulda took a dive for.Sharkey probably could have made himself look better, if he did like Jack Johnson did,and said he went in the tank for Carnera. But to his dying day,Sharkey manned up and said he got whipped. He was just an erratic fighter who blew some opportunties, like looking at the ref,and then getting knocked out by Dempsey. One reporter wrote on the Sharkey- Carnera fight,"that is the first time I ever seen a guy get hit with an uppercut, and fall flat on his face".Jack was just having a bad day.
He made that point to stress it was a dive ... still, fair points you have made ... like I said before, either way it is not impressive for Sharkey ..
This was the one fight that was consistently touted as possibly being fixed for the world heavyweight title. It was parroted so much it kind of morphed into fact throughout the years. The film doesn't seem to back it up. Another point was that Ernie Schaaf was good friends of Sharkey and was managed by him. Schaaf died in the ring against Carnera after returning to the ring too soon after a bout of Spinal meningitis. I have a hard time believing Sharkey would want to take a dive to this guy. Speculation of The number of fixed Carnera fights vary widely which ones are confirmed or have strong evidence pointing towards foul play? I am aware of the Stribling Dq's, the Godfrey DQ, and bombo chevalier fight.
