Is Afolabi right? Boxing is now about acting and showmanship and not about fighting?

In a recent interview Ola Afolabi commented that boxing stopped being about fighting eachother in the ring many years ago.

To summarize Afoloabi, he said something to the effect that pay per view and TV has turned boxers into trash talking actors that are trying to protect their records while generating media and fan attention to hype up fights, just to let fans down by either disappointing fights in the ring or anticipated fights not happening at all.

Specifically, Afolabi mentioned Jones Jr./Hopkins and the Haye/Klitschko farce. One could possibly add the Mayweather - Pacman saga.

Whatever happened to two self-confident men simply getting in the ring and delivering great fights, so the fighting does the talking instead of the hype doing the talking? Did boxing stop being about fighting inside the ring many years ago?

There is no problem with Mayweather,he will only fight fighters he knows are not doping. The only way he knows if a fight is clean is if the fighter is subjected to random blood and urine tests. While the system can still be cheated at least the risk is mitigated

There is no way you can sit there and say mayweather hasn't cherry picked. Fair enough I give him credit for finally taking mosely on but it was at least two or three years too late.

The money vs pacman fight was always gonna happen in november. All that drug testing bollocks is to hype the fight.

I would sooner see mayweather take on martinez!!!

*****, shut the **** up. Mayweather pics the opponents who he thinks will generate him the most $$$ or greatest leverage in upcoming negotiations, this isn't some state secret. He's looking for the most gain with the least pain, that's his game.
    I ain't knocking it, it's fact.

Yep he has a point but thats the modern day world we live in.

You can even put khan and paulie in there as well. I doubt that fight would of done anywhere near those numbers without the scuffle at the weigh in, the bitchy remarks by both camps and khans text pics!

The casual fan loves drama....simple as that, they need a story. Thats why things such as 24/7 are so popular.

Also it'd be interesting to see the actual numbers that boxing use to get before....you also need to take into account that back in the day there wasn't PPV.

Afolabi is right but thats the only way fighters these days can generate that type of income. Ali paved the way and the rest realised thats best way to go.

If PPV had been around in Ali's time a whole lot of other fighters would of done the same thing when they realised how much money Ali would of been making....scratch that Don king would of been making. Imagine the type of gates, ppv numbers Ali would be getting if he fought in this day and age. Just like Pac stops the phillopines Ali would probably stop the world!!!

Yes, he is absolutely right. It's sad but true. Boxing is 95% bull****, 5% action. We live in a **** era.

40 years ago, Mayweather would have fought Margo, prime Mosley, Cotto, Tzuyu, Pac and Williams by this stage of his career.

Boxing is only one step behind WWF at this stage.

  7. Afolabi makes some interesting points. Although I don't necessarily agree completely, I think it is true to a certain extent.

Dick head!! This drivel has nothing to do with the opening post. Go rant your Floyd dick sucking nonsense in threads specifically designed for that.

Afolabi is a dumbass. Did you guys see the showboating and acting he was doing in the Enzo Mac fight? e was getting his ass whipped and he was showboating like Kevin Johnson.

What a fool this dumb guy is. He lands a lucky punch on a weak chin and all of a sudden he thinks can speak......

Diablo would brutally knock Afolabi out.
