Poor Example. Duran moved upto WW as a 26yo, MAB didnt move to FW until he was 27, MABs first titles were at Super-Fly.

A more comparable feat would be MAB taking on an gatekeeper titlist at lightweight and winning

 

Another thing that surprises me is how much this forum talks about duran on a daily basis even though he really hasnt done anything in over 20 years. Whenever there is a current 135-154 lbs fighter that emerges people immediately say "would he beat duran". Very few people on this forum compare modern fighters with carlos ortiz, joe gans or ike williams. All the talk is always about Duran. Typical ESB, the current fighters like pacquiao and paul williams remain to be underappreciated and we have to hear nonsense like how duran would destroy them easily.

 

Even if you were right about the first part of that post, it's not the whole story. As much as anything I think it's about the way Duran won and the way he looked in the ring. The fight looked like a joke, like a human vs. monster affair, and yet Roberto pulled out the decision by slugging with the monster.

 

Duran was at his prime at Lightweight, Barrera was at his best at 126lbs.

Lightweight > Middleweight = 4 divisions.
Featherweight > Welterweight = 4 divisions.

...Comparable, same thing, stop being argumentative for the sake of it.

Pac is very appreciated on here, even on classic there are some guys who think he will end up comfortably in the top20, perhaps Top15. If that´s not appreciation what else is?

Duran is just like other fighters. Bigger than life, bigger than boxing. When we are talking current hws people compare them to Tyson. It´s the same. Those guys transcended the sport. The only one in the game today who comes close in doing so is Pac.

 

I think Paul Williams is a p4p fighter at the moment, he beat margo, cintron, old winky, sergio martinez and hes still getting better. He's going to be one of the main guys along with chad dawson in the upcoming years.

I think with pac's wins over cotto, clottey and hatton along with his resume below 135, he clearly deserves to be ranked above someone like chavez. Yet he's always picked against chavez when JCC has never really beaten anyone good except meldrick, camacho, tony lopez and rocky lockridge.

 

Sorry but I don´t think the Cintron win should count at all. Winky was done when he beat him and he didn´t beat Martinez at all. He´s matched right that´s all. He is far too open, far too predictable to really achieve something. Very overrated.

Stlye make fights. I´d pick Chavet to beat Pac too.

 

Maybe that's because they called it the "Classic Boxing Forum". I'd agree some moderns get a bit of a raw deal in here but you're hardly going to see this forum taken over by the present.

 

MAB was eating his way upto FW-SFW, look at the interviews at the time, he said he was having to eat more to make FW. He never drained at all to make weight and had to eat more to be a FW, it wasn't near his ideal weight even if he was still in his prime there. Duran was still in his prime at WW. Duran was also in his prime at 147 after having outgrown the LW division at 26, Leonard was his best perforance imo, but yes he had more advantages at 135, just like MAB had more physical advantages at 118-122

The size difference between Khan-MAB was as big as the size difference between Duran-Barkley, so I stick by my point

He was pretty big for for a 122lbs fighter, but he was still strong or stronger than most of his opponents after he moved up...including Hamed.

Amir Khan is a Welterweight posing as a 140 pounder anyhow.

Erik was always noticeably the bigger man in their three fights.

Khan was freakishly big for 135lbs, he'll be a Welterweight in the coming years...make no mistake about it.
