At the risk of looking a complete ****...what the **** is a "twitch fibre"?, is it phrase of the month because I have never heard them/it mentioned until recently
Well you are partly wrong there, if you look at East African Athletes, they tend to be long distance runners, so must have a lot more slow twitch muscle fibres. Also, i'm not so sure this is race specific either. What do the rest of us have?? I think there are ethnic groups that have predominantly more fast/slow twitch muscle fibres, but I think it's not consistant with other groups. It's more or less a mixed bag I think. Dunno if i am talking total bollocks here though heh.
thats only your opinion. since you have never even heard of fast twitch fibres, ill take your opinion with a pinch of salt. you may wel lbe right but after the games he beat all comers in Germany. then in 1981, he dominated all top 4 americans in berlin in the 100/200. its bull**** to lump "blacks" together. like you say, particular ethnic groups from different climes have different physiological makeup. i remember hearing how the maori physiology is well suited to rugby, something to do with how the fat is stored under the skin/distributed around the body. there was suggestions that this came from the diets they had eaten for hundreds of years, especially with many birds as part of the diet. also if you look at aboriginal australians and many of the health problems they suffer, it comes from a radically changed diet over a short period of time. their bodies were used to the high carb, fibre and nutrient diet they got from wild potatoes, catching prey etc but now the sad fact is many have diets now consisting of KFC all day, and sugary drinks. they also have a lower tolerance to alcohol with their bodies lacking many of the enzymes europeans have to deal with the breakdown of alcohol. and aborginals are "black" but do not have the same physiology as jamaicans for example.

there was a good sports documentary about this about a year ago. Colin jackson (the welsh/jamaican hurdler) was researching why some people excell at an explosive sport . he made the loose connection between people of some jamaican descent being predominately good at explosive sports. he then learnt about the "fast twitch muscle"----and jumped on the fact that it is found more commonly (about 18%!) in jamaican descendants then in white/european people. anyways it seems that black folk have more then white folk is a generalisation,but has about 10% validity.
So you have to be some sort of anorak **** now to enjoy athletics :thumbsup I may not know about twitch fibres but I do realise that a time of 10.25 is only winning something when the elite are absent. The last white man to win the 100m against all comers was Borsov in 1972 in a time over one tenth quicker than Wells managed 8 years later.

I'm not a massive athletics fan but it seems clear to me that as the time needed to do well the 100 meters has got nearer and nearer to 10 seconds, and now below it, white runners have struggled to compete and the reason for that is probably genetic.
I used to play a lot of basketball and fast twitch muscle fibres are talked abot a lot by guys aiming to dunk the ball. Black guys do definately have more fast twitch fibres, you only have to look at how many professional players that stand 6'1" can dunk the ball and they are all black without exception. There are a couple of guys in history that buck the trend but the shortest white guy to dunk in a game that I can remember is Rex Chapman who is 6' 4". There are black guys as short as 5' 7" that can dunk which is insane!
I didn't think it was that slow :nut Times like that would have barely made a semi final in the past 20 years :think
