This is highly questionable. I think Sharkey had major chin issues vs punchers.

As far as chin goes I don't know ... Sharkey fought Fitz. Who was the biggest hitter Rocky ever fought ? At heavyweight Moore and Walcott don't come close to me ...

Concrete evidence is a joke. Give me concrete evidence that Ali was faster than Holmes without using footage ...

This was Jeffries 6th or 7th listed fight. Choynski was a hall of fame fighter in his prime. I do not think Rocky would have beaten Choynski this green, and we know Joe Choy Ko'd Johnson, who had 24+ fights. If you think Choynski hit the hardest of this time, then Jeffries chin is battle tested.

If you read a full review of Jeffries vs. Choynski, the draw seems a bit of a gift to Choynski as he was floored three times, and ran and did not land much in the second half of the fight.

No one cares about the Finnegan fight. The Munore fight was ok, but credit Jeffries for doing what dominant champion should do to a fringe contender type. That is blow him out.

PS: Frazier got his knees buckled with Stander, and did not look good vs Daniles. Essentialy these were fringe contenders too. The differnce is in the quick and decive result for Jeffries.

    Tom Sharkey was

    1. knocked out by G Washington

    2. knocked out twice by Gus Ruhlin

    3. knocked down by 156lb Kid Mccoy

due to THESE events happening, how can you possibly make a case for tom sharkey having a chin near the level of Marciano's?

These men were bigger punchers than Gus Ruhlin, whom twice cleaned Sharkey's clock. Rex Layne was a big puncher at 34-1 with 25 knockouts, only 23 year old too. I know you don't think much of Joe Louis, but he still had a powerful left hook and was 6'2 214lb...58lb heavier than kid mccoy, and over 40lb heavier than bob fitzsimmons. Can you imagine a 156lb kid mccoy flooring and nearly knocking out a prime rocky marciano?

Although this question was not addressed to me, I would point out that Rocky was floored and by the 2 best punchers he fought in Walcott and Moore. In the Walcott fight Rocky was not only floored, he was hurt and holding on in round 11.

Without clear film its tough to say who was faster for sure. Marciano was never swift handed. Sharkey in his time was described as swift handed.

If I had to guess who had faster hands, I would say Sharkey.

If I had to guess who had the better chin, maybe its Marciano by a shade.

For those intersted, I highly recomend Sharkey's read on fighters I meet. its only 10 pages or so, but its packed with good stuff, including sparring with John L Sullivan himself.

I never heard of G Washington. I checked box rec. If the fight happened, and it was Sailor Tom Sharkey, he was 21 years old. There is no clear result, just a KO? without a round.

Ruhlin got to Sharkey at the end of his career. Provide a source for the McCoy knockdown if you can.

Floring, perhaps. Knocking out with punches no. McCoy was a tricky boxer, and rather skilled at creating cuts.

sharkey was 26 years old in the prime of his life the first time ruhlin knocked him out.

You think Ruhlin could knockout a prime rocky marciano?

"Provide a source for the McCoy knockdown if you can."

New York Times 1-11-1899, round by round report on the Sharkey-McCoy fight. Weights given as 173 lbs for Sharkey and 156 lbs for McCoy.

"Third round--McCoy led and landed his right on the face, and then Sharkey began to fight in his old style. He rushed like a mad bull and tried with his right, but the blow fell short, and then he swung his left and landed hard on the face.
McCoy was in like a cat, landed a good, hard job on the face with his left, and then Sharkey countered hard with a right hand swing on the ribs. A hard left swing on the jaw sent Sharkey to earth, but he arose, only to go down again on his back. He was up fighting again in two seconds, but was in distress when the bell rang."

Later rounds indicate Sharkey was in severe trouble (the fifth) and had a closed eye (the eighth). Sharkey rallied to stop McCoy in the tenth.

It appears from this report that Sharkey was down twice in this round. I can't even number all the articles I have read over the years saying that Sharkey was knocked down in this fight.

Wow Sharkey knocked down twice by a 156lb man. How Embarrasing. Can you imagine a 156lb fighter dropping Rocky Marciano twice? I doubt any 156lber in history could last more than 3 rounds against marciano, let close his eye and knock him down twice.

Old Fogey said it best...Marciano was an undefeated ATG champion who swept the best of his era. Sharkey was just a decent top contender. Nothing more. I find these Sharkey-Marciano comparisons to be rather strange.

Sharkey went down more times than a Sunday hooker.

He seemed to wade in with both fists flailing regardless of what his opponent had designs on.
