why is cotto even fighting for Top Rank? the guy's got his own promotional company that he could have been growing for years fighting under. guess he's probably locked into a contract, but wouldn't you think that contract would also contain some kind of non-compete agreement?
i hope cotto wins this fight, but i see foreman using that range/technical ability and winning a decision.
Before nearly every Cotto fight he is picked to lose. Granted Top Rank hasn't done him any favors and he has been in with some stiff competition lately, but I remember when everyone was picking Malgnaggi to beat him, then Quintana, and then Judah...He never really gets any love before fights (aside from his fanactics), but then after he wins the guy he beat wasn't that good, he wasn't a lineal champ etc etc. I guess it happens to most fighters on here, but it is so annoying to read and hear. If you don't think he's going to win this fight, please give him his due credit if/when he stops/beats Foreman. Same as if you didn't think he was going to beat Clottey give him his due credit for squeeking out a close hard fought decision (with a significant disadvantage in the form of a gash over his right eye). Don't fault him for not destroying someone you predicted he would lose to. I guess that goes for every fighter not just Cotto.
Yuri can give Cotto fits he has some good boxing skills he has the reach and size advantage against him and Cotto will get busted up trying to get inside. This by no means will be an easy fight for Cotto. Foreman is used to getting hit by bigger men than Cotto so his power won't be a factor IMO. As this fight gets closer I'm starting to lean towards Yuri.
He was repeatedly snapping Margarito's head back while boxing off the backfoot and actually busted him up worse than Mosley was able to. Margarito not being deterred by those punches says more about his ability to absorb punishment than it does for Cotto's ability to throw hard shots while not being set. True enough, Mosley did stop Margarito, but theres more factors favored into that than just "hard, effective" punches. Mosley couldn't deter David Estrada or Jose Luis Cruz and I doubt anyone would consider either one of those guys less "dentable" than Margarito.
I think Cotto will win a UD, but Foreman could win by decision as well. Either way I think it's going the distance.
why is it you say you are shocked by cottos career path, i think he has had a brilliant career, gradually increasing the level of opposition up until facing and beating p4p fighters (mosley), then falling slightly short against margarito ( who may well have had hand wraps) and losing to the concencus p4p no 1 at the time, surely this is the kind of career every boxed would hope for rather than fighting bums i say fair play to himself and top rank for making the big fights with him, its much better to watch him fight top level opponents and lose than him beat up alfonso gomez style opposition every few months...few threads time people will moan about top fighters not facing each other yet are agreeing that cottos career was mismanaged when he fights the best....make your mind up
I have only picked against Cotto twice, and that was against Clottey and Pacquiao. I said the Clottey fight would be a close fight that could go either way and I said Pac would destroy him.
I've seen plenty of Trinidad fights. However, I also know that Hoya, Hopkins and Wright all said their gameplan was to neultrilize Tito's left hook. Why were they all so focused on his left hook if his right was so good? Why did they all throughly outbox Trinidad?
"He never hurt me, really" That's what Margo said after the fight. We've seen Margo hurt by Mosley, Santos, and Clottey. Cotto's power is probably slightly below Mosley's and definately above Clottey's. This suggests that Cotto's power is comprimised when he's not coming foward and/or can plant his feet. Just watch Cotto fight. Look at how much weight he puts on that front foot. It helps him generate a lot of power in that left hook. It also leaves him vulnerable defensively, which is why Steward is working to correct it(something he will fail to do). Anyway, we can argue over this night and day, you'll never agree. After June 5th though, the outcome of the fight will be etched in stone.
